Beyond luxury resorts, the Maldives offers something far more authentic – untouched beauty, vibrant marine life and a slower pace of island living. Snorkel pristine reefs, cruise atolls on a traditional dhoni and sleep under the starry night sky.

Discover our Maldives tours

The Maldives is a chain of around 1,190 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, known for its crystal-clear lagoons, sandy beaches and some of the richest marine ecosystems on the planet.  But beyond the villas and resorts lies another side of the Maldives - shaped by local fishing communities, remote sandbars and reefs alive with sea turtles, reef sharks and manta rays.

Our small-group tours are designed to show you the Maldives at its most authentic. Whether you're sailing between islands on a traditional dhoni boat trip, pairing Sri Lanka with a Maldives adventure, or traveling with family on a snorkeling-focused trip, each itinerary is built around life on the water. Expect daily snorkeling, visits to local island communities and freshly prepared Maldivian cuisine.

Highlights of the Maldives

Snorkeling & Marine Life

With over 1,000 species of reef fish, the Maldives is one of the top snorkeling destinations in the world. Swim with sea turtles, reef sharks and stingrays amidst a backdrop of vibrant corals. If you’re lucky, you may even spot manta rays or whale sharks, which are most commonly sighted between October and April.

Life Aboard a Dhoni

A dhoni is a traditional Maldivian wooden boat and one of the very best ways to explore the islands. Outfitted for small-group travel, these vessels include a local crew (captain and chef), open-air sun decks, simple cabins and the option to sleep under the clear night sky on deck.

Local Island Life

Step off the boat and into everyday Maldivian life. Visit fishing villages, browse local markets, and explore island mosques - experiencing a side of the Maldives most resort travelers never see. On some islands, you may even catch a traditional Bodu Beru drumming performance.

Secluded Beaches & Sandbars

With only about 200 inhabited islands, the Maldives is full of untouched stretches of sand. Our tours take you to uninhabited islands and sandbars where you can swim, relax, and enjoy the scenery—often with no one else around.

The Maldives – Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The Maldives is a year-round destination, with daytime temperatures typically in the low 80s°F and warm ocean waters averaging 82–86°F. The dry season (December to April) brings the calmest seas and great visibility for snorkeling, especially between January and April. The wet season (between May and November) includes occasional bursts of rain, but conditions remain warm throughout. For the best opportunity to see manta rays and whale sharks, plan your trip between October and April.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel?

Ideally you should be a comfortable swimmer to get the most from the experience. The waters are generally calm, though many snorkeling sites are in deep, open water a distance from the shore. You will also need a reasonable level of mobility to use the ladders when entering and exiting the water.

What is a dhoni?

A dhoni is a traditional Maldivian boat. The ones we use are adapted for small-group cruising and serve as your base throughout the trip, offering comfortable (though simple) cabins, a shaded dining area, open decks and a local crew. While not luxury vessels, dhonis allow access to quieter atolls and more remote islands that larger boats can’t reach.

What should I pack for the Maldives?

Aboard the dhoni, casual clothing and swimwear are perfectly fine. However, the Maldives is a Muslim country, and modest dress is expected when visiting inhabited islands. Clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is recommended when off the boat. You should bring breathable clothing, a hat to protect from the sun, reef-safe sunscreen (free from oxybenzone and octinoxate) and plenty of swimwear.
