The beautiful but forbidding Svalbard Archipelago (literally meaning “Cold Coast”) consists of four main islands, including Spitsbergen, and about 150 lesser ones. A Norwegian territory, and only permanently inhabited for just over a century, Svalbard lies deep within the Polar Circle just 600 miles from the North Pole. This extraordinary land, 60% of which is ice-covered, is home to some of the most extraordinary wildlife and birdlife in the world, including the Polar Bear – whose population outnumbers humans!
