I have always had a ‘thing’ about deserts but none have taken my breath away quite as much as Wadi Rum in southern Jordan. Vast expanses of red sand, monolithic rocks towering over wind-carved sand dunes and the silhouette of a camel train on the horizon… all adding to the drama and dreaminess of the place. I would happily go back again and again.

In my experience I’ve found the thing you need most when travelling (apart from your passport!) is a sense of humour. Seeing the funny side of things helps you meet and get on with your fellow travellers and enjoy those encounters with people whose language you don’t speak. Also for when things go a bit wrong and all you can do is laugh.
