Food writer travels to Kerala for Onam festival

People planning to take an adventure holiday to India may like to watch a brand new BBC television show to get them in the mood.

Food writer and television presenter Steven Gates travels to various countries to experience their festivals in a new show called Feast, shown on BBC Four on Tuesdays.

The first episode of Feast, in which the presenter travels to India to take part in Onam, is now available on BBC's online video-on-demand service: iPlayer.

Onam is a Hindu celebration that brings the whole country together, irrespective of religion. People hoping to take part in this fete should travel to the south-west Indian state of Kerala towards the end of August or beginning of September.

The Onam is a type of harvest festival and marks the homecoming of the mythological King Maveli.

The next episode of Feast, in which Gates will visit Japan to take part in the Naked Man festival, will show this evening (June 28th) on BBC Four at 11pm.
