Visit Carthage to see 'crumbling remains' meet 'sprawling' city

The historical Tunisian urban centre of Carthage is a great place to visit on a solo holiday, as travellers will be able to see the beautiful "crumbling remains" meet the sprawl of the capital of the country, nearby Tunis.

That is according to a travel expert writing on the Lonely Planet website, who pointed to Carthage as one of the world's "most intriguing lost cities". According to this author, Carthage shows the remnants of being conquered many times.

"Rebuilt by the Romans and raised to new glory, it once again found itself at the nexus of conflict and was destroyed by Arab Muslims expanding their own sphere of control," the Lonely Planet author noted.

"Today, on the outskirts of Tunis, you can visit the crumbling remains of Roman baths, temples and villas being absorbed by the sprawl of the capital city."

Among the other cities which appeared on Lonely Planet's list of "lost cities" that are worth exploring on an adventure holiday was Angkor in Cambodia.
