One of the country's most popular tourism hotspots, this ancient city boasts magnificent architecture dating back through some of the world's most important civilisations.

It was occupied by settlers as long as 6,500 years ago, but arguably stood at its most influential under the Roman rule that once extended over Jordan's plains.

In the past 100 years, parts of the city once thought lost have been rediscovered thanks to major excavation works, and Jerash is today considered one of the finest examples of Roman remains anywhere in the Middle Eastern world.

Because of its unique geographical position, it also represents a culmination of the eastern and western worlds.

As Jordan's tourism authority explains: "Beneath its external Graeco-Roman veneer, Jerash also preserves a subtle blend of east and west.

"Its architecture, religion and languages reflect a process by which two powerful cultures meshed and coexisted - The Graeco-Roman world of the Mediterranean basin and the ancient traditions of the Arab Orient."
