Travellers advised to see the Spanish town's cathedral, home to the worlds largest censer

Travellers planning a walking holiday in Santiago de Compostela should visit the Spanish town's spectacular cathedral.

That is according to Telegraph travel correspondent Charlotte Williamson, who advised visitors to check out the cathedral's censer (a vessel used to burn incense).

She said: "The cathedral is spectacular, with the largest censer in the world (a real treat if you're lucky enough to see it in action)."

The silver censer, which is officially known as the Botafumeiro, is suspended from the cathedral's ceiling and stands at five feet high and weighs around 55kg.

According to legend, its great size is due to the fact the cathedral needed to freshen the air after many pilgrims, who had traveled great distances, attended services at the building.

Holidaymakers who may be in need of some relaxation can make the short trip to the coast and soak up some sun in the nearby beaches.
