Elif Safak recommends seeing fairy chimneys from hot air balloon

Those planning to book solo holidays in Cappadocia, Turkey should definitely consider taking a hot air balloon flight over the area.

That is according to a leading Turkish novelist, who says she took inspiration from the area when writing her latest book.

Elif Safak, the country's biggest-selling female novelist, wrote in the Guardian that a hot air balloon flight is an "unforgettable" experience.

"The place and its balloons helped me to rethink the notion of 'peaceful surrender', which played a central role in my latest novel, The Forty Rules of Love," she told the news provider.

"I believe Cappadocia's modesty, serenity and uniqueness will speak to your heart."

Ms Safak added that the balloon ride was liberating because there were no lanes to stick to, as in a car, but the vehicle just moved "up and down with the current".

Cappadocia is a region is central Turkey, well-known for its fairy chimneys - thin, tall rock formations that protrude up from the ground.
