Peruvian festival 'an extravaganza' for people on activity breaks

Brits on activity breaks in Peru may like to attend the Candelaria Festival in the town of Puno, which takes place every February.

It could be a fun excursion for those on an adventure holiday as it combines religion and culture in a spectacular mix of dance and music.

Such is the opinion of Cathy Packe, a travel writer for the Independent, who attended the event herself.

She writes that throughout the day, dance troupes, some including children, perform their routines in front of a panel of judges.

The participants dress up in papier mache face masks, layered skirts and fringed shawls that twirl with the movement of the dancing.

Travellers on an activity holiday in Peru could also try some of the baked chicken, hot corncobs or ice creams that vendors will be selling at the event.

Ms Packe writes: "This all-day dance display is one of the highlights of Puno's Candelaria festival, an extravaganza that lasts up to two weeks and attracts participants and spectators from many miles away."

Peru is a popular attraction for adventure travel as it is full of fascinating Inca history, which can be explored at Machu Picchu, is home to the Andes and also boasts the world's highest navigable lake.
