Adventure travellers are generally 'a little more prepared' regarding health precautions

A pharmacy group has warned that people planning solo holidays are not taking out the necessary health precautions before they travel.

According to Lloydspharmacy Online Doctors, travellers who stay in five star resorts, people who book their holiday last minute and people who stay in main tourist areas, are most at risk.

Dr Tom Brett, lead general practitioner for the organisation, noted that while their survey found that more than 60 per cent of people were concerned about falling ill while abroad, "not everybody does anything about it".

However, he noted that people taking hiking holidays are usually better prepared, compared to other travellers.

"Backpackers often are a little more prepared because they are going off the beaten track," he said.

"[Things people need to think about are] the vaccinations they may need - there are a lot of illnesses that can be prevented by a vaccination - and also if they are going further afield, to Africa, South America or Asia, then they need to think about malaria prevention as well."

The survey also found that 14.6 million days of holiday were lost to diarrhoea in the last year by Brits travelling abroad.
