Overview

Rangoon
Rangoon (Yangon) still retains much of its colonial character and is the largest city in Burma. Our tour starts and ends in this bustling city filled with colourful markets, old colonial buildings, tea shops, trishaws and street vendors. Above it all towers the majestic golden Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the great wonders of the Buddhist world.

Inle Lake & Shan State highlands
Surrounded by forested hills, Inle Lake provides a dramatic backdrop for the Shan villages found on its shores. We travel by longtail boat to explore the lake’s stilted villages, unique floating gardens and markets where Pao, Intha and Shan people trade goods. The lake's fishermen are famous for the remarkable style of 'leg-rowing' that they have developed. A train ride with the locals takes us the old British hill station of Kalaw from where we take an easy walk through cool pinewood hills to a Palaung hill tribe village. We travel north to Mandalay across the highlands on a scenic drive.

Mandalay & Ayerarwady River cruise
Mandalay was the last royal capital of the Burmese kingdom and is considered to be Burma’s most historical and culturally rich region thanks to the surrounding ancient royal capitals of Ava, Mingun, Amarapura and Sagaing. We spend time discovering this rich and beautiful heritage, including intricate and skilled local arts and crafts, and can enjoy a classic sunset from Mandalay Hill. We take to the mighty Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River to see the giant broken stupa at Mingun and later when we leave on a full day cruise downriver to Bagan.

Temples of Bagan & Ngapali Beach
Without doubt one of the world’s premier archaeological wonders, the plain of Bagan is studded with literally thousands of 1000 year old temples and stupas that rival those in Angkor for their splendour. Bagan's vast complex, set amid rustic and typically rural scenes, is a mixture of distinct architectural styles, including the brick and stucco masterpiece of the Ananda Temple, still used as a place of worship. We fly to Thandwe and drive a short distance to the relaxing palm-fringed beaches of Ngapali.

Should I go?
Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader, gave her blessing to the return of tourism to Burma in November 2010. National League for Democracy (NLD) leader U Win Tin said: “We want people to come to Burma, not to help the junta, but to help the people by understanding the situation: political, economic, moral – everything.” This marked the end of the tourism boycott started in 1995 and the return of small groups and individuals to Burma has been endorsed by Burma Campaign UK and the Free Burma campaign. Explore are delighted to return to Burma after pulling out in 1995 in response to the call for boycott.
We use a privately-owned Burmese agent for all of our services, each itinerary has been carefully planned not to use any service owned by or affiliated with the government and to maximise the benefit and interaction with Burmese people wherever possible.
