Walking Week In The Alps

Overview

Bernese Oberland
Situated deep within Switzerland, the Bernese Oberland has superb walking country. There are long mountain chains that include the infamous trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and lesser-known peaks around Kandersteg. The Lauterbrunnen Valley - a UNESCO world heritage site - is a vast U-shaped glaciated valley and the lower hillsides of this region are dotted with farmsteads and small villages making this classic ‘chocolate-box’ Switzerland. We stay in 3 separate valleys all linked by quiet mountain trails.

Kandersteg & Kiental
The first part of the tour is spent exploring the pretty Alpine town of Kandersteg. Surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs and snow-clad peaks, we walk through Alpine meadows to the glaciated lake of Oeschinensee. From Kandersteg we walk along a magnificent high path with views of Lake Thun to the little-visited valley of Kiental - an idyllic part of the Swiss Alps. Here we spend two nights giving time to explore this quiet rural setting.

Lauterbrunnen Valley
Trekking from Kiental along a trail known as the 'Panoramaweg,' we arrive on the shores of the beautiful Lake Thun and then take a short train ride to Stechelberg where we spend 3 nights. Stechelberg is perfectly located for unrivalled views at the far end of the high-sided valley - justifiably a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most classic example of U-shaped glaciated valley in Europe with sheer cliffs over 600m high and spectacular waterfalls. From the hotel we take guided walks, have time to ride the famous Jungfrau railway and explore the quaint traffic-free village of Murren perched high on the cliff-top. You may also like to visit Interlaken, ride the mountain train to Shynige Platte or head to Grindelwald.
