Overview

Overview

Across the Plains
We start with the two most important medieval cities along the Castilian part of the route, Burgos and Leon. These cities blossomed in line with the growing importance of the pilgrims route - naturally we explore these historic areas on foot. The surroundings are dominated by high plateaus, a stark contrast to the mountainous scenery of Galicia.

Into Galicia
We start warming up on our walks and take a slight deviation to Las Medulas, the most important gold mining area in Roman times, the surrounding hills which are riddled with caves is now nominated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will spend a day here to explore the multitude of trails and the distinct landscape. The most scenic walking route of the pilgrims trail starts once having conquered the hills of Galicia at the Pedrafita do Cebreiro pass (1.109m).

Santiago de Compostella
Several days of fine walking through countryside dotted with old villages gradually bringing us closer to our final destination. From the Monte de Gozo we see for the first time the cathedral of Santiago, there will be plenty of time to wander through the historical centre.
