How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Very committed and helpful. Esp. helpful to me as my parents both fell ill just before the trip and he voluntarily lent me his mobile so that I could ring and check up on them more than once and then pay him back. Very caring. The other thing was managing to juggle our trip and fit in a day of climbing up to Tiger's Nest (Bhutan) which was, for some reason, not on our trip agenda. This was fantastic. Kiran arranged it and was very patient as I walked the slowest! Please try to put it onto the agenda, it is as good as seeing the Paro festival.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Be prepared for some long journeys on rough windy roads. Be really aware this is not the time of year for blue and clear skies of the Himalayas. Take a hot water bottle for Dargeelling and some very warm clothes for this part of the trip-it was seriously cold!

Do you have anything else to add?

Please consider a Bhutan only trip to include the central part of Bhutan and time it in Oct to some of the festivals in that area and clear blue skies! Also, we managed to fit in seeing some archery which was great fun in Bhutan-if you can, please see if you can incorporate this for future trips.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Three remarkable countries in three weeks make a lot of highlights. The river trip in Dhaka had echoes of Venice gondalas, and the inquisitive glances of the Bangladeshi people always with a ready smile. I loved the dawn over Kanchenjunga, walking between rice fields as the sun sets, Darjeeling's toy train, the ever present prayer flags, and the climb up to the Tigers Nest Monastery. The scenery is stunning, from the rice terraces to the snowy peaks, the terracotta temples to the huge Dzong forts, and tea plantations to mountain forests. Too many amazing memories!

Laura loves the countries we visited and it showed through her enthusiasm for everything we did. You wont get a better tour leader, ever. Her easy engagement with local people and depth of knowledge brought the trip to life for me. Yet her calm professionalism in managing borders, bus changes, boats, money, hotels etc appeared almost effortless. A real star.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

The trip is full on from the start and packs a lot in. Some travelling days are long but the scenery and stops on the way make it well worth while. That said, do everything you can while there and sleep when you get back! Take double the memory cards you think you will need, to say it is photogenic does it an injustice.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

The whole tour was an absolute joy, with new experiences presenting themselves every day. The journey threw up enlivening moments wherever we where on our journey through Bangladesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Kolkata. Physically and emotionally the climb up to the Tiger's Nest as very special but how can it compare with the impromptu street concert by two musicians in our honour in a small Bangladeshi village when we stopped for an afternoon cup of tea. The production of eleven plastic chairs, the surrounding audience of 300 and the beautiful rendition of two love songs was hard to beat!

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Fantastic, the tops, nothing too much trouble, so willing to take us to any event (cattle market, brick factory, restaurant kitchens!), excellent frisbee skills particularly at altitude, wonderful knack of getting on with everyone and distributing photographs taken last tour to people throughout the journey was marvellous. We couldn't have asked for abetter tour guide.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Book it!

Do you have anything else to add?

Need to re-think policy of using Nepalese guides instead of UK based next year.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

The surprises of Bangladesh. We have lived through so many horrors in Bangladesh: war of independence from Pakistan, famines, floods, but never been there. Now there are signs of hope. Yes, they have their downsides: the garment industry has murderous fires; the growth of Dhaka has demanded millions of bricks and laid waste to much countryside. But women's migration to Dhaka and earnings in factories have changed the status of tens of millions of women as we know from The Economist. There is so much to see, and people are so friendly! The group was much surprised and pleased. The long cultural history and diversity of religions was another surprise, and the quality of hotels and food.

Jackie Mullen is a very exceptional woman and must be your best Tour Leader. She has the patience of a saint and the determination and endurance of an ox. She's also kind, perceptive and responsive, which makes her able to relate to everyone - the group, officials, agents, hotel staff - to the advantage of the group. Jackie is great fun to be with, very knowledgeable on development and the countries of the tour, and works hard for ethical tourism. This included not only concern for the environment but inspiring us to respect local culture, so that we didn’t, for instance, photograph inside Buddhist temples, dress inappropriately for the activities of the day or give money or sweets to begging children. Jackie gave us a very good time from Dhaka to Kolkata.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

"Pack layers of clothing! And consider a land-only tour. We had an extra three days in Dhaka, and an extra three in Kolkata: Dhaka helped us rest from the flight (we are senior citizens); Kolkata offered great interest. We travelled October - November. Dhaka was warm in October, as was the journey to Sikkim. Sikkim and Bhutan varied, as we kept crossing very high ridges, so layers of clothing were helpful. Temples limited the amount of flesh we could expose.

Warm outer garments were welcome for the heights. Take plenty of hand sanitizer – use it or wash your hands thoroughly with soap before eating anything. (I didn’t have any problems, others did.)

Dhaka has appalling traffic jams, but that was the worst inconvenience we suffered. The river trip was beautiful. "

Do you have anything else to add?

"I think the only Muslim buildings visited were the Lal Bag in Dhaka. Maybe that's the only one possible but it seems a pity.

Congratulations on comfort: food, hotels, even buses!"

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

I largely picked this tour to see Bhutan, but Bangladesh stole my heart! My biggest memory is the Bangladeshi people, so friendly, fascinated with us and happy that we were visiting their beautiful country.  As others have said it is so clean and green.  Another hightlight was Darjeeling - loved just walking around taking it all in, and then of course there was Bhutan - stunningly beautiful - the land of the Thunder Dragon and Gross National Happiness!  The walk to Tigers Nest Monastery was tough but worth the climb.

Jackie Mullen was our TL - she was very knowledgeable and organised.  Always gave us lots of information about the cities and places we were visiting.  Good company too!

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Be prepared for a busy trip - there is a lot of journeying by bus on this tour - but you get to see lots of the country this way.  There are not really any rest days - you are on the go a lot - but it is well worth it and if you are prepared for this it is not a problem - great trip - thoroughly recommend it!

Do you have anything else to add?

Fabulous trip - go for it!  You'll pick it for Bhutan, but come away loving Bangladesh!

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

My first experience was the city tour in Dhaka. We did a river cruise, and everyone on the boats around us waved to us and took OUR photos with their cell phones. The river was chaos, but was so fun. In Bangladesh, there isn't much tourism, so when we got out to the villages, we immediately drew a crowd. I loved out rickshaw ride to a temple in Rangpur. The hotels, while labeled simple, were charming, and many had AMAZING views. Darjeeling was amazing, and 3 days there is perfect. The Toy Train is a wonderful experience. Bhutan is a lovely country. Punakha Dzong was breathtakingly beautiful, as was Tiger's Nest.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

My Explore Tour leader was incredibly organized, and flexible. She knew many of us liked to take photos, so she arranged some good photo stops for us. There were a few avid readers, so when she provided town maps for free time, they usually included a nice book shop if the town had one. She also knew Roland (Aussie) and I (American) met on an Explore trip, so when we had free evenings, she made sure to recommend nice restaurants for us to go out to. We also had various ages, and she made sure everyone understand what we were doing, and when, and how to properly dress and act. She was absolutely fantastic. I want to travel with her again.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Make sure to take plenty of pocket tissues and hand sanitizer, because toilet stops on the long drives may be primitive.

Do you have anything else to add?

I have no idea what tour I will pick next year to match it.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

"Bangladesh - Dhaka river trip. Sikkim - Pelling and the view of Kanchenjunga, third highest mountain in the world, only about 25 km. away, lit up by the sunrise. The scenic drive in Sikkim on the edge of a big drop to the rushing river below.
Bhutan - the hike up to visit the monastery know as Tiger's Nest - demanding but spectacular, and a very moving Buddhist experience."

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

Dee (Delia Brown) was an excellent leader throughout this long and greatly varied tour. She was familiar with the countries and knew good places to stop for chai or a meal. She provided sketch maps of towns and information on the people and religion and sights. She was very encouraging when I felt a bit daunted climbing 450 m. up to an altitude of over 3,000 metres asl to see the Tiger's Nest. A caring person.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Be prepared for a tour that is not high on comfort on the road, as some roads are very rough (the worst road in the world is in West Bengal leading to the Bhutanese border), and some are very exposed to huge drops with no barriers. Overall I would rate the tour physically fairly demanding. Also it is easy to pick up Traveller's Diarrhoea, so you should take a suitable antibiotic with you and take it promptly if you get a fever.

Do you have anything else to add?

"I would recommend this tour as I liked the itinerary. I wanted to go to Bhutan but the cost ($250 per day) deterred me. So when this tour included five days in Bhutan it suited my interests. Bangladesh would not have been a place I thought of going, but I am so glad I did. The people are delightful, and although its historical sites are sometimes shabby, it was a pleasure to visit some in excellent condition - and we were the ony tourists, so there were no crowds at sites, and NO-ONE TRYING TO SELL US SOMETHING. Wonderful.
I would like to suggest that in Darjeeling, getting up at 3.30 a.m. to join a queue of 4wd's up Tiger Hill to view the Himalayas at sunrise was a waste of time - only one in six days is clear of mist. "

An excellent tour with many highlights. The most unexpected was Bangladesh which as somebody else has said was so clean/tidy/green and full of friendly people.  Bhutan lived up to the hype with stunning scenery and people so very proud of their heritage.  We were lucky enough to be in Paro for its Tsechu (Festival) and would recommend trying to book on a tour that included this or the one in Timpu. We also were in Kolkata for the Holi Festival which was an unexpected bonus.  The only negative was that the day in Kolkata was a bit surplus - we were so tired and it was so hot/humid that we didn't really appreciate it. If you enjoy different experiences, you'll love this trip. The best bit? Not sure whether the amazingly friendly Bangladeshi people or their incredibly clean & beautiful countryside was the winner. Or was it the experience of having tea and cakes in old colonial Darjeeling having enjoyed a fabulous ride on the toy train that did it. Or was it the almost fairytale experience of stunningly beautiful Bhutan where the people are so proud of their country that they all wear national costume every day through choice. I can't make up my mind. The best thing to do is go and experience the trip for yourself then you can make up your own mind. (BH- 12th April 2010)

I had been contemplating this tour for a couple of years before I finally made up my mind to go. I was wondering if Bangladesh was a place to visit, what would it offer? I fell in love with the people, most of them very poor, but they were so friendly, and they kept their country clean, no plastic bags anywhere. The people made a great impression on me. Next is Sikkim with the monasteries and Darjeeling in the beautiful Himalayan landscape. Finally you reach Bhutan, another very special remote place. People in Bhutan wear traditional dresses. On this tour your camera just goes click click all the time, there is so much you want to remember. (BH- 2006)
