The exquisitely detailed yet monumentally scaled Roman temple ruins found at Baalbek in Lebanon are a sight to behold. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Lebanon's greatest Roman treasure and is counted by many to be among the most impressive wonders of the ancient world. Known as Heliopolis during the rule of the Roman Empire, the ruins are some of the largest and best preserved in the world.

A visit was once a ‘must do’ when visiting Lebanon but political instability meant all but essential travel to the Bekaa valley where the town is situated was advised against by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. This advice has now been lifted and Baalbek is finding its way back into our itineraries. All future departures of our Lure of the Lebanon and Lebanon and Jordan Discovery will include a visit to this historic site.
