About Us - Responsible Tourism

  • About Us - Responsible Tourism

Responsible tourism is - and always has been - one of the driving principles of Explore. We care deeply about travelling in a way that positively impacts the people and places we visit. To us responsible travel means that:

  • We ensure people who work for Explore are treated fairly and paid a fair wage
  • We learn about and respect the customs and culture of the country we are visiting so that we do not offend local people
  • We ensure that local people benefit economically by employing them as leaders, guides and drivers - and by eating in local restaurants and using locally owned hotels where possible
  • We minimise our impact on the environment by travelling in small groups, offsetting our carbon emissions, reducing waste and supporting conservation projects

We’ve worked hard at these things to ensure we are welcomed in the places we all love to visit, meaning local people benefit and our groups enjoy a better trip. It could be through some of our great community based tourism experiences, meeting local people or experiencing the pristine wilderness and leaving it untouched. Want to see how your tour makes a difference? Have a look at the Earthmatters box on every tour.

Carbon Offsetting

Projects

As well as supporting many charities around the world, there are also a number of exciting projects we are working on to ensure that the future of the environments, communities and people we visit on tour, is a good one.

On Tour

Even though our tours are responsibly designed, there are still a lot of things you can do to make your holiday even more sustainable. Some are just small changes to the way you travel – for example where you buy souvenirs and how you dispose of your rubbish. Other things, such as learning some of the local language, can take a more time, effort and prior planning. All of these things, however, can make a huge difference to your experience. We’ve come up with some simple but handy hints and tips on what you can do to make your trip more responsible.

In the Office

Being responsible is no idealistic statement or cliché at Explore. It’s not just what goes on overseas that counts, we also apply the same principles to our UK operation. We look at every aspect of our business, from quirky details like installing waterless urinals in our head office, to major decisions to offset all of our flight emissions. At Explore we have a Responsible Business Forum made up of members from every team who meet regularly to discuss the very far reaching topics. The dedicated team works hard to ensure we operate not just responsible tours, but also a responsible business.
