Tell us about yourself

I was born in Essau, a farming community in the north bank of the Gambia. I was raised in Agricultural fields full of birds, reptiles, animals, butterflies, spiders and insects, where I built the passion in nature, birds and wildlife in particular. I am a graduate from high school. In 2001 I was trained, licensed and certified tour guide by the government of the Gambia, I have been leading small and big group in the Gambia and Senegal and the sub region.

I lead Senegal and the Gambia trip.

How long have you worked for Explore?
I have been working with explore for two (2) seasons, between October 2022 to April 2024.

What is your favourite local food?
My favourite local food is peanut butter sauce commonly call (Domoda) peanuts is our main cash crop and the biggest export.

What do you most love sharing with Explore groups?

What I love sharing most with my explore groups is the culture and traditions, food, history and the birds and wildlife of the Gambia and Senegal.

What are you most proud of in your country?
I am more proud of my country is the rich culture and traditions, beautiful nature and over 600 species of birds.

What do travellers find most surprising when they visit?
The peaceful and friendliness of the people, irrespective of their differences in culture and traditions, language and religion

Assan is an excellent Explore Tour Leader who worked constantly to ensure that we all got the best out of our trip. A great ambassador not just for his native Gambia, but also Senegal, he put a lot of effort into passing on his knowledge to help us understand how the two countries tick, their histories, strengths and their problems without overloading us, and always with a sense of humour. Leading a tour of these birding destinations for largely non-birders would never be easy, but he was able to both kindle the interest of the uninterested, and give support to the more interested. Ever ready to answer questions, and help us out with any problems and illness, Assan patiently gave us a smoothly run, brilliant holiday and always went the extra mile. We will never forget the tour.

Our trips to Senegal and The Gambia exceeded expectations and particularly credit must be give to our our Tour Leader Asian who not only did a great job in navigating all of its logistical challenges, but gave us the tremendous insights into the history of the two countries, its changing culture and and precise knowledge of its wildlife and plant life landscape. I have travelled on about 20 tours like this including 7 with Explore. The Explore trips are always well organized but this one was the best. Assan is kind and patient. He has a deep compassion and reverence for Gambia and Senagel and is both an excellent Ambassador of the two countries and Explore. I was also impressed by how other people we met at the various hotels, restaurants, boat captains and other received him. They clearly respect and admire him. I think that Assan represents all that is good about Explore and I hope he receives the 2023 Leader Award.
