Explore on foot

Spring comes early to Portugal’s Algarve region, with balmy daytime temperatures in the late teens to early twenties, and cool nights providing a comfortable night’s sleep. March is warm without being humid, so it’s perfect for walking holidays: choose from either of our eight-day holidays or combine both to make a two-week escape. You could find yourself exploring the remote coastal trails from the unspoilt base of Sagres, followed by the orchards, rolling hills and fishing villages close by the Eastern Algarve town of Tavira.

Nepal in the spring is truly spectacular: the country is blanketed in swathes of rhododendron forests which burst into flower against the amazing mountain backdrop -  great for photography. It’s a fantastic time of year to trek to the Annapurna Sanctuary, one of the country’s most iconic trekking routes. You’ll hike around this vast natural amphitheatre to Annapurna Base Camp, staying at cosy mountain lodges known locally as teahouses, plus visiting the cities of Pokhara and Kathmandu.

Or explore by bike

Head for South East Asia in March and you’ll catch the tail end of the dry season – it’s starting to heat up but you won't get the steamy temperatures of peak summer, so it's ideal for cycling holidays in Vietnam and Cambodia. Our best-selling trip takes in paddy fields, jungles, the Angkor temples and the Mekong River in 13 days; exploring by bike on quiet backroads gives you the chance to fully immerse yourself and get closer to the local people.

Late March is a great time to visit Cuba – not as crowded as January and February, but still enjoying the fine weather of the dry season with pleasant temperatures. There are great conditions for cycling, and on our Cycle Cuba holiday you’ll have the chance to explore in detail, pedalling between the stunning limestone scenery of Vinales and the UNESCO-listed city of Havana. If you’re very lucky, your trip may coincide with the capital’s celebration of classic cars.

The world in bloom

Japan’s spring cherry blossom season is a huge draw for the spring months, which is best seen from late March until mid-April. This short window is a busy time to travel, but you may also catch it slightly earlier, though not in its full glory on our Simply Japan holiday, which takes in Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanazawa. Travelling mid-March means you can participate in White Day: on 14th March men give gifts to their partners, as opposed to Valentine’s Day the previous month, when women give gifts to the men.

It may be a desert nation, but Jordan is not without its lush, green spaces. See the country’s wildflower-filled valleys in full bloom in March, when the temperatures have not yet reached the scorching heat of summer and peak season is still a few weeks away, meaning sights like Petra will be less crowded, too. Enjoy a little luxury at the end of each day on our Treasures of Jordan holiday, where you’ll stay in premium hotels and a plush tented camp under the desert stars while you explore Greco-Roman ruins, the saline waters of the Dead Sea and the dunes of Wadi Rum.

To see Mexico at its most lush and green, visit in March. Spring heralds the start of noticeably warmer temperatures as it comes to the end of the dry season – you can expect temperatures in the mid- to late-twenties and an abundance of plant life. Head to the cactus state on our Mexico and Guatemala holiday to see Mexico City’s blooming jacarandas, the verdant colours of the jungle and the colourful markets of Oaxaca.

While cherry blossoms may get all the attention, Spain’s orange blossoms are equally stunning when seen in their vast numbers. Andalucía is one of the best places to see it, and in early March the fields and cities are full of the smell and sight of beautiful blooms. Compare the contrast from the white villages of the Sierra de Arcena to the sizzling character of Seville with its UNESCO-listed Moorish palaces, tapas restaurants and plazas filled with flowers on our Highlights of Andalucía holiday.

Cultural holidays in March

South Africa

Wildlife lovers seeking a safari should head to the great game reserves of South Africa and Swaziland in March – it’s a great time for migratory birds and signals the start of autumn, when there’s around 12 hours of daylight and fewer crowds. Choose our South Africa and Swaziland trip and not only will you get a chance to learn about the Big Five in the Kruger National Park, you’ll also get to discover Africa’s last monarchy in the kingdom of Swaziland, where the Swazi tribe take great pride in keeping their culture and traditions.

One of the world’s most colourful festivals, Holi is an iconic festival that happens all around India every March - whether you’re a first-time visitor or are wanting to return to the country to experience the festival, you’ll not be short of places to participate in the celebrations. Experience the colourful events from Agra on our Golden Triangle trip: where better than the city that houses the country’s most famous monument, the Taj Mahal? The weather may be heating up in April but temperatures are still comfortable.
