6 Highlights of Sicily

The beautiful island of Sicily boasts rugged golden coastlines, Europe's tallest active volcano, quaint rural countryside and delicious food. Here are six top highlights not to be missed on a small group tour to Sicily.

Syracusa

Head to Ortygia Island, the old town area of Syracusa city, on our Classical Sicily Tour, to relax outside a street-side bar and watch the world go by. Snack on arancini - crispy breaded rolls filled with gooey cheese and rice - and sip an ice-cold beer. A popular highlight on our Sicily tours, Syracusa boasts timeworn sandstone buildings that line quaint cobbled streets, twisting and turning through a maze of narrow corridors. A trip to the outskirts of the city will take you to the Neapolis Archaeological Park which is home to a well-preserved Greek theatre and, what is believed to be, the tomb of Archimedes.

Villa Romana del Casale

Intricate and colourful mosaics adorn the floors of Villa Romana del Casale in Sicily. With surprisingly life-like images crafted from vivid tile fragments, these are some of the best-preserved mosaics in the world and are a Sicily highlight not to be missed. After a busy day admiring these incredible works of art on our Ancient Sicily Trip, return to the town of Piazza Armerina to feast on traditional cassata siciliana dessert and immerse yourself in this tranquil and unspoiled corner of the island.

Valley of the Temples

The imposing columns of the Valley of Temples stand tall in the bright sunlight and are clearly visible from the modern city streets of Agrigento set upon the hillside above. Standing at the foot of the Temple of Concordia, the scale and might of his remarkable ancient Greek edifice become apparent. Join our Classical Sicily Tour to wander amongst these magnificent golden ruins enveloped by a band of silvery-green olive trees and admire views of glistening turquoise seas stretching towards the horizon.

Erice

Set upon a mountain crag close to the north-west coast of Scilly, the medieval fortified town of Erice offers spectacular views over azure blue seas towards the rolling knolls of the Egadi Islands. Join our Ancient Sicily Trip to explore the maze of narrow cobbled streets, twisting and winding around ornate stone buildings and through timeworn archways. The Castle of Venus is precariously balanced on the steep wooded hillsides and the bell tower's dulcet chimes reverberate through this hilltop retreat.

Mount Etna

Europe's highest volcano, Mount Etna, dominates the skyline on the east side of the island. Still active, the volcano is a must-see highlight of any trip to Sicily. Stay in the peaceful seaside town of Giardini Naxos where fishing boats come and go, and the locals barter for fresh fruit, before taking a short drive to the red-hot earth of Etna's crater. Alternatively, join our Cycle Sicily Tour to ride by bike around the lava fields of this mighty peak.

Palermo

In contrast to the rural countryside, craggy coastlines and sleepy ancient towns of Sicily, the capital city of Palermo is a hive of fast-moving activity. Vibrant cafes entice you in to indulge on sweet Italian treats and mouth-watering pizzas, and colourful market stalls spill out onto the streets to tempt you with their beautiful displays of handmade goods and fresh produce. Join our Family Sicily Adventure to learn how to make pasta and gnocchi and head to Piazza Marina to uncover the ancient twisted trees of Villa Garibaldi.
