Discover Europe by rail with Trainline, where the journey is just as memorable as the destination. From scenic routes to seamless city connections, travel effortlessly to and through our tours while taking in coastlines, countryside, and iconic landscapes along the way.
There is something undeniably exciting about traveling by train through Europe. Imagine watching the landscapes slowly change outside your window as you listen to the rhythm of the tracks below you and the hum of fellow travelers around you. It's a slower, more intentional way of getting from place to place that allows you a moment to pause and savor the journey as much as the destination.

For travelers joining an Explore tour, train travel isn't just a beautiful experience, it's also a practical way to enhance your trip. Ride the rails to your tour's starting point, extend your trip by hopping on a train to another destination, or choose a trip that includes a train journey to see more of Europe along the way.

Let the Journey Begin

One of the simplest ways to elevate your travel experience is by swapping a flight for a scenic rail trip as part of the journey to your tour's starting point. The route from London to Edinburgh and then onwards to Inverness, for example, offers a gradual immersion into Scotland's wild beauty. Instead of flying directly into Inverness, you can leave London's urban buzz behind on board a train, watching out your window as the scenery softens into the English countryside before giving way to the rugged coastlines and historic cities of the north.

The stretch between Edinburgh and Inverness is particularly striking, with views of sweeping moorlands, quiet lochs, and distant highlands. Inverness itself serves as the gateway to our Walking Scotland's Orkney Islands tour, and by taking the train, you'll already feel connected to the landscape you're about to explore on foot.

Extending the Adventure

Train travel in Italy is very convenient, with high-speed routes running frequently between major cities, connecting city centre to city centre. Extending your tour in Italy with a train journey couldn't be easier. One of the most compelling rail experiences available is the journey from Milan to Sicily.

Milan marks the final stop on our Lake Como Walking tour, but for those wanting to continue their Italian escape, the train south is an experience in itself. As you travel south, the landscapes shift from northern lakes and alpine backdrops to sunny countryside and coastal views. The Intercity Notte train adds a unique twist, with the whole train boarding a ferry to cross the Strait of Messina en route to Sicily. It's a rare and memorable moment that transforms a simple transfer into a story worth telling.

In Eastern Europe, the journey from Krakow to Zakopane offers a quieter, more gradual transformation. Krakow, the final stop on our Upgraded Baltic States and Poland tour, is a vibrant cultural hub, but the train south transports you seamlessly from city energy to alpine calm. Flat plains slowly rise into rolling green hills dotted with wooden villages, before the dramatic peaks of the Tatra Mountains, all experienced from your seat.

Our Cycle Provence trip begins and ends in Marseille, where you can easily hop on a train to Nice for a a chance to experience the French Riviera from a new perspective. The route from Marseille to Nice hugs the Mediterranean, revealing sparkling blue waters, hidden coves, and pastel-colored towns along the way. With around 20 trains running per day, it's as convenient as it is scenic.

On some of our tours, train travel isn't just a way to arrive, it's woven directly into the experience itself. Our Discover Scandinavia trip is a perfect example of this, with a ride along Norway's iconic Bergen to Oslo route.

Often described as one of the most spectacular train journeys in the world, it's easy to see why. Crossing the Hardangervidda plateau, the train passes waterfalls, snow-capped peaks, and vast open spaces that feel almost untouched. The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, from lush greens in the summer to snow-covered in winter. This route can be enjoyed independently, or as part of our Discover Scandinavia trip, where it becomes a highlight rather than just a transfer.
