Baltic brilliance: Discover Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

The Baltic cities of Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius are filled with castles and cobbled streets, but there's more than meets the eye. Read on for Rossy's take on our Baltic Capital Cities tour.

The Baltic states of EstoniaLatvia and Lithuania forms a unique region. Situated along the shores of the Baltic Sea in northeastern Europe, each country is as traditional as it is trendsetting, from fairytale-style castles to Michelin fine-dining.

Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius offer a compact blend of tumultuous history and a modern-day cosmopolitan atmosphere that ripples across each capital city. We caught up with fellow Explorer Rossy, who joined our Baltic Capital Cities tour.

Read on to discover how she found her eight-day trip, from traversing cobblestone streets to local markets:

Describe this trip in one word?

Historic. The Baltic states have long, tumultuous histories, and we learned so much about each capital city on this trip. In Vilnius, we visited the KGB Museum, which is set in the former KGB headquarters. It gave us an eye-opening insight into Soviet rule and I'm glad we visited at the start of the trip, because it provided context for the rest of our week in the Baltic states.

What surprised you the most about the Baltic states?

There's amber everywhere in the Baltic states! This beautiful gemstone was produced by pine trees which grew in northern Europe over 50 million years ago. You can buy amber pieces in shops and jewellers across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - I bought a bracelet.

What were your fellow Explorers like?

There was around 13 of us on this trip, with ages ranging from 30s to 50s and 80s. There was a mix of couples and solo travellers - in fact, this was my first ever solo trip - and many had travelled with Explore before. As there was so much to see and discover, we found it easy to bond with each other.

What was the highlight of your trip?

The highlight of the trip, at least in Vilnius, was being there for the 100th anniversary of the Lithuanian Song Celebration. It was such a beautiful display of cultural pride with Lithuanians from all over the world coming together to sing and celebrate their heritage. The atmosphere was so lively, and the unity among everyone there made it an unforgettable experience. I remember seeing everyone rehearsing in the morning and then the concert in the evening - it was amazing!

What was the accommodation like?

In each capital city, we stayed in excellent locations at the heart of the old towns. But our overnight stay at Pakruojis Manor was a truly unique experience. The atmosphere was different - a bit spooky but lovely. The historical ambiance and well-preserved architecture really transported me back in time. I enjoyed the guided tour. The beer-tasting experience was enjoyable - even though I don't drink, I was offered lemonade and didn't feel left out. Someone was singing with an accordion, which added to the fun. Overall, it was a unique experience and truly felt like living in a secret garden.

What was the food and drink like in the Baltic states?

In the Baltic states, there's a large focus on food being locally sourced or foraged. I enjoyed tasting traditional Baltic cuisine, which includes soups, casseroles, meat and fish dishes.

The Baltics states are proud of their local-brewed beer, too; the group tried light, medium and heavy variations. They each have their own herbal liquor and raspberry and cherry flavoured wine. One item I wished I'd tried on this trip is 'pink soup' - it's a Lithuanian beetroot soup called Šaltibarščiai. It's served cold and is particularly popular during the hot summers.

How did you find the pace of the trip?

This trip is listed as having a Full On pace, which I'd say is accurate. The first couple of days involved a lot of walking (there was so much to see!) but then it seems to balance out. We spent our free time either visiting cafes or bars, or revisiting any sites we wanted to spend more time at.

We travelled between destinations in our own minivan, and we'd make stops along the way which helped break the journey up. The longest drive of the trip was the journey to Riga, which took around five hours - but the ride was comfortable and well-managed with several stops along the way, making the journey feel shorter.

What top tips would you give others about this trip?

Depending on the time of year, the weather is changeable. I'd recommend bringing a light jacket and an umbrella - there's also a lot of walking involved, too, so make sure you wear sturdy trainers or walking shoes.

When you visit the Hill of Crosses in northern Lithuania, I'd recommend buying a cross at the entrance and leaving it within the grounds to send well-wishes or for good luck. It's a sacred place in the Šiauliai region and it had a peaceful, ambient atmosphere - I was pleased I could experience it for myself.

Rossy's 5 highlights of the Baltic States:

  1. Tallinn, Estonia: The well-preserved medieval architecture and panoramic views from the Upper Town are simply breathtaking, and display Tallinn's rich history and charm.
  2. Pakruojis Manor, Lithuania: You'll truly feel as if you've stepped into the 19th century at this living museum. Explore the grounds before a good night's sleep in atmospheric surrounds.
  3. Walking tours: The best way to get to know Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius is simply by foot. Soak up the culture and history as your tour leader tells you everything you need to know about each destination.
  4. Kaunas, Lithuania: This former capital city of Lithuania is located right in the heart of the country. Kaunas is home to characteristic architecture, with some buildings dating to the 17th century.
