A New Way to Experience Japan
When crafting our newest Essential Japan itinerary, Product Manager James knew that any tour of Japan with 'essential' in the title needed to include a hands-on cultural moment.
"I love learning about different cultures and destinations," said James, "and I'm always looking for experiences that bring travelers closer to local people. Japan has so many incredible traditions, so when we developed our new itinerary, it was important to include hands-on cultural moments that guests could take part in. After experiencing the lantern-making workshop myself, it was clear this was something special."
Hosted by a master lantern maker and calligraphy artist, you'll learn the art of Japanese brush lettering before creating your own traditional tabletop lantern. With guidance from the artist and translation from you tour guide, you'll have the opportunity to practice the careful brush strokes of kanji characters.
In Japanese calligraphy, every line carries intention. The pressure of the brush, the direction of each stroke, and the balance of the finished character all communicate human emotion and meaning.
Once you've chosen a kanji that resonates with you, you'll carefully transfer your design onto a lantern using traditional brushes and ink. After the ink has dried, the lantern folds neatly into a box, ready to travel home with you as a handmade reminder of your time in Japan.
As James said, "Not only do guests learn from a master artisan, but they leave with a meaningful keepsake they've created themselves, a reminder of their journey that will last long after they return home."
