FIFA fever is sweeping across North America, and with it comes something bigger than the game itself. Across the host cities, fans are celebrating their teams with parades, chants, music, and unique traditions that bring a piece of their home nations' culture to life.
Watching these cultures converge is a great reminder that some of the world's most memorable experiences happen when people come together to celebrate. The World Cup only comes along every four years, but that same spirit of celebration can be found in festivals and events around the globe all year long.

France: Champagne & Cycling

It's no surprise that the French know how to celebrate–Champagne is a worldwide symbol of celebration, popping (excuse the pun!) at everything from F1 victory podiums to New Year's Eve to World Cup wins, after all! Beyond the iconic Champagne spray, one of the country's most iconic celebratory traditions is sabrage, the art of opening a bottle of Champagne with a saber, a practice dating back to Napoleon's cavalry officers.

That same celebratory spirit can be found on two wheels during the Tour de France, when communities gather to cheer on riders as they pass through towns and countryside. Winners of the Tour de France don't spray or saber their Champagne, though in the past they have sipped it while riding in the final, processional stage of the race.

Spain: Tomatoes & Tradition

Spanish celebrations are often centered around gathering to enjoy delicious food and wine. Milestone events from soccer wins to weddings and beyond are excuses to bring together friends and family for a celebratory meal that could include yummy Spanish staples like jamón, paella, or patatas bravas.

Food is also the centerpiece of one of the most unique celebrations on this list: La Tomatina, the famous tomato-throwing festival held each year in the town of Buñol, near Valencia. What began as a spontaneous food fight has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic festivals. Approximately 20,000 people gather to participate in the playful tradition before the streets are promptly cleaned, leaving behind little evidence of the colorful chaos.

Italy: Revelry & Rivalry

Italy might not be in the mix for this year's World Cup, but take a stroll in nearly any Italian city on a nice summer's evening and you'll still find no shortage of celebration. From buskers playing lively music to impromptu dancing in the street, there is something about Italy in the summertime that just feels joyful, no matter how the home team is doing.

Five-time World Cup champion Brazil isn't just famous for their strength on the field, they are also famous for the amazing atmosphere throughout the whole country during the World Cup. When major victories occur, neighborhoods erupt into vibrant street parties called blacos, filled with music, dancing, and celebration.
These parties echo the same energy found during Carnival, where entire communities come together to transform everyday streets into spaces of joy and connection. Held each February, Carnival is one of the world's largest festivals, filling the streets with music, dancing, and colorful parades.

Norway: Vikings & Victory Chants

Few fan traditions are as distinctive as Norway's Viking Row, a spirited celebration that sees supporters link arms and mimic the rowing of a Viking ship while chanting in unison. The Row is taking over the stands during matches, and also happening in the streets of Norway as supporters celebrate their team from afar.
Norway doesn't just celebrate their viking heritage during the World Cup, though. There are numerous viking festivals across the country each year, including the Avaldsnes Viking Festival, where visitors can step back in time through reenactments, traditional crafts, storytelling, and feasts that celebrate Norway's rich cultural heritage.
