Highlights of Madagascar

Go in search of elusive lemur, immerse yourself in verdant rainforest, and hike in the shadow of red mountain peaks. Here are the best highlights of Madagascar you won't want to miss.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

The lush rainforest of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is teeming with exotic wildlife, and is home to several lemur species, including the largest - the Indri - whose high-pitched call reverberates through the forest on our Madagascar Wildlife Tour. Head out into the night to go in search of tiny mouse lemur scuttling around the canopy, keep your eyes peeled for camouflaged leaf-tailed geckos, and beware of bright red tomato frogs in the dense undergrowth.

Antananarivo

Antananarivo, also known as 'Tana,' is the capital of Madagascar. Tiers of red-roofed medieval-looking houses cover the hillsides, and the busy streets are lined with colourful shop fronts. Take our Madagascar wildlife tour and stop at a local food shack to try creamy fish curries and delicious salady voankazo (vanilla-spiked fresh fruits with lichee nuts), and head to Ambohimanga, home to the oldest palace in Madagascar, to discover panoramic views over fertile rice fields and verdant countryside.

Andringitra

Set off in a 4WD to explore the mountainous landscapes of Andringitra National Park on foot. Thousands of plant varieties, hundreds of bird species, and over fifty mammal breeds thrive amongst the jagged red mountains, granite outcrops, vast valleys, lush rainforests, and high altitude meadows. Hike to the summit of Imarivolanitra (2,658m), the highest point in southern Madagascar, to uncover far-reaching views across the biodiverse terrain and sleep under the stars with three nights of camping in the wilderness.

Ranomafana National Park

Rise early to go in search of Golden Bamboo lemur in Ranomafana National Park. Endemic to forests in South-Eastern Madagascar, these rare lemurs are sadly critically endangered, as are many of Madagascar's lemur species. Walk deep into the cloud forest to uncover pearly-white waterfalls, as well as Malagasy boa constrictor, chameleon, black parrot and cuckoo roller. Spend the night camping in the heart of the forest and take a dip in warm thermal baths on the banks of the Namorona River.

Isalo National Park - 'Madagascar's Grand Canyon'

Naturally eroded red rock blasted by the wind over many millennia rises from the vast plateau of Isalo National Park to create Madagascar's mighty 'Grand Canyon'. Deep gullies score the red-hot landscape, and patches of dry forest pepper the hillsides. An expected oasis of turquoise pools sit within cool rock crevices, and the hollows of ancient tombs reveal insights into the nomadic life of the region's zebu-herding Bara people.

Antsirabe Central Highlands

Sun-bleached colonial buildings line the streets of Antsirabe in the Central Highlands of Madagascar. Once a holiday hotspot for European missionaries, their influence can be clearly seen in the local architecture, including the numerous thermal baths. Take a ride in a brightly painted rickshaw, browse street-side market stalls overflowing with handmade wares, and sample deep-fried mofo-anana bread, crispy nem (egg rolls) and juicy kebabs.
