How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Travel can disrupt healthy habits, but small choices make a big difference. Greenhouse Juice Company shares tips to stay well throughout your travels.

New places. New food. New routines. Travel is full of new experiences, which is part of its magic, but it's also the moment when healthy habits can quietly slide off your radar. Suddenly, you're running off of only pastries, sleeping at odd hours, and wondering why you feel more drained than refreshed.

Staying healthy while traveling doesn't require strict rules or sacrificing fun--it's more about small choices that help you feel your best so that you can actually enjoy the trip. We connected with Hana James, Co-Founder and Head of Community & Advocacy at Greenhouse Juice Company, for her tips on how she stays healthy while traveling.

Hydrate

Start with hydration. "It sounds basic," says Hana, "but it makes a huge difference in energy, mood, and overall well-being." Despite its simplicity, water is often the first thing you skip when you're busy navigating airports, road trips, or days full of exploring, and dehydration can sneak up on you in the form of fatigue or headaches.

This is an easy one to fix. Bring a reusable water bottle and make it part of your routine to refill whenever you can. "I often pack electrolytes to add to my water, especially since I tend to drink less when I’m traveling," Hana says. Your energy levels will thank you!

Support Your Immune System

Crowded airports, recycled airplane air, and busy public spaces...it's no wonder so many people get a cold right after vacation-- or worse, in the middle of it! "Supporting your immune system can be incredibly simple," says Hana, "but also a game-changer!"

A few simple habits can make a big difference. Washing your hands regularly, especially after flights or public transit, is a small step that goes a long way. Travel-sized hand sanitizer can be a great addition to your carry-on to help with this.

To supercharge your immunity, try adding vitamins and electrolytes. "My go-to is (unsurprisingly) Greenhouse ginger shots (both the Ginger Defence and Fiery Ginger)", says Hana, "but even something like Vitamin C can go a long way when you’re on the move."

Support Your Immune System

Don't underestimate familiar snacks from home. "I always bring shelf-stable options like raw almonds, cashews, or pistachios so I’m not relying on whatever’s available when hunger hits," says Hana.

Food can also play a role in keeping your energy up and your immune defenses strong. Try to include fruits and veggies when you can, even if it's just by adding a side salad, grabbing fresh fruit at breakfast, or exploring local fresh juice options. As a juice expert, Hana has some tips: "I typically look for freshly pressed choices and try to avoid anything with excessive added sugars. Keeping it simple and close to the source is usually a good rule of thumb!"

Eat with Balance

Trying local cuisine is one of the best parts of traveling, and you should absolutely enjoy it. But, like all the other routine changes that come along with traveling, indulgent eating day after day can be a major shock to your system.

Look for meals that include vegetables, protein, and whole foods, not because you "should" but because they help to keep your energy steady. "I know I feel my best when I’m eating a balanced mix of protein, carbs, and vegetables," says Hana. "My approach is simple: enjoy everything, but aim for variety and color on the plate so I’m still getting what my body needs."

Don't Skimp on Sleep

Sleep can be the hardest habit to maintain, especially with time changes and busy itineraries, but it is key to staying healthy. If you arrive somewhere with a big time difference, getting outside into natural light and staying awake until a reasonable local bedtime can help you adjust faster. "Even a short walk outside can help me feel grounded again after a long travel day," says Hana. Her other post-travel day essentials? "Movement, sunlight (when possible), and a nourishing, home-cooked meal are my go-to reset."

Hana had one final piece of advice for us, and it starts before your trip does. "Do a bit of prep before you go," she says. "When you prioritize your immune system, movement, sleep, and nutrition ahead of time, you set yourself up to feel strong going into your trip - so you can be more present and enjoy the experience without overthinking your habits while you’re away."
