Top 5 Walking Trends for 2017

Here's what we think will be big in the world of walking in 2017

With a wonderful mix of UNESCO world heritage sites, medieval cities, snow-capped mountains, crystal clear coastlines, national parks AND a very reasonable cost of living the Balkan countries are set to be prime places to visit in 2017. The trails are well marked and through some of the most spectacular mountain and coastal scenery that Europe has to offer and yet you will barely meet another soul as you look down over the multiple inlets of Kotor Bay in Montenegro, or wind through the alpine forests of the Accursed Mountains in Albania.  Although perhaps better known, Explore can take you off the beaten track in Croatia, visiting the islands off the Dubrovnik coastline with their multi-hued green forests and hidden lakes.  With a wealth of trails, culture, great food and superb hospitality, the Balkans really are a great destination for walkers.

Despite the devastating 2015 earthquakes, Nepal is very much fully open for tourism and eagerly anticipating increased numbers of travellers. With the fortitude and resilience that are so characteristic of the Nepali people, the trekking routes have been made safe and many of the historic buildings that were damaged by the 2015 earthquakes have now been repaired. We’re sure that 2017 will see increasing numbers of travellers trekking among the world’s most spectacular mountains. Why not join them and help support Nepal’s fragile economy at the same time.

Combining walking with food and drink experiences

Food and drink-focused holidays are just one facet of the broader trend for what’s been termed ‘experiential travel’. At Explore, we’ve always been aware that food and drink are an incredibly important part of many people’s holidays and we’ve always made sure that our trips provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy authentically local cuisine and produce. Combining eating and drinking with walking is the perfect mix, with the exercise both helping to build up your appetite and burn away those calories! Following on from the popularity of our ‘walking and wine’ trips, the first of which was launched a few years ago, we now also offer five ‘Tastes’ trips exploring different regions of Italy.

Self-guided Walking

As we all become better travelled and more adventurous, the flexibility of self-guided walking has seen our portfolio rapidly expand over the last three years and Explore now offer 27 different holidays of varying difficulty and duration to Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Switzerland and Greece. With the logistics of your accommodation, luggage transfers and walking routes all taken care of, you have the freedom to enjoy it all at your own pace – stop and admire the views, enjoy a delicious lunch of local cuisine or have a leisurely lie in before you start the day.

Greece and its islands

After surviving recent financial turmoil, Greece is back and fighting fit and a wonderful destination for walkers in 2017. Generally known for their package holidays there is a world of mountains, gorges, coastal paths and hidden trails on offer on the diverse and ever welcoming Greek Islands. In Crete you can walk in the heady heights of the White Mountains, before making your way on foot down the longest gorge in Europe all the way to the coast.  On Evia, make your home on board a traditional Greek Caique and sail from village to village taking trailheads from each new stop.  You can walk the full length of the Corfu trail, if time allows, or just take a week to do the North or South.  The Greek hospitality is warm and welcoming and the walking is a beautiful surprise that most don’t expect.
