Journeying through Japan

Tick off Japan's must-sees and who-knews on our dedicated small group tour. Read on for Kelly's take on this fascinating country:

Fast paced and fascinating, Japan doesn't shy away from the spotlight. Its ancient history plays into the modern day with still-standing temples and holy islands, while speedy bullet trains and neon-clad cities showcase Japan as a forward-thinking powerhouse.

We caught up with Kelly, who joined our Highlights of Japan tour. Read on to discover what she made of our 8-day small group tour to the Land of the Rising Sun:

Describe this trip in one word?

Outstanding. Highlights of Japan was a bucket-list tour for me - the culture truly blew my mind away. This small group tour sees you tick off the best things to see and do in Japan - from Sensoji Temple in Tokyo to Jigokudani Onsen in Nagano - while also gaining authentic insights into local life and learning about the way they do things and why.

How did you find your tour leader?

Our tour leader was David, who was the first runner up in the 2023 Explore Tour Leader Awards. David was super knowledgeable and excellent at bringing us all together. He went above and beyond to find food or restaurants that suited everyone, including those with dietary requirements.

What were your fellow Explorers like?

There were around 10 people in our small group. We had a diverse range of ages, from mid-30s to late 70s, and this trip would suit solo travellers, too.

I noticed that some members of the group had travelled with Explore before - one has been on over 10 Explore tours - and they told me that they'd continued to travel together. There were also others travelling with Explore for the first time. It was really interesting to listen to everyone's travel stories - that's the great thing about a small group tour!

What's the best thing to eat in Japan?

My vote goes to okonomiyaki. It's essentially a cabbage-based omelette or pancake packed with fillings of your choice. We also tried takoyaki (deep-fried balls of octopus), kushukatsu (deep-fried skewered meats and vegetables) and ramen at a Horigotatsu-style restaurant, where you sit on the floor around a low table.

Another great dish to try in Japan is bento, which is served in a box-shaped container, or 'bento box'. Bento includes small poritions of different food, like rice, fish, meat and vegetables. Bento is a really convenient on-the-go meal - like when riding a Shinkansen bullet train!

What was your highlight of the trip?

My highlight of Japan was Omicho Market in Kanazawa. It's a fish market where swathes of fresh fish and crab are sold daily, as well as vegetables from the nearby countryside. Everything was so colourful, and I just loved taking in all the different sounds and smells.

I also appreciated Japanese culture, too. I found everyone were very respectful, not just to other people but also to their environment. Some areas of Japan, like Tokyo, can feel like organised chaos, but it's exactly that: organised.

How would you describe this trip in one word?

Outstanding. Japan was a bucket-list tour for me - but it truly blew my mind away in terms of the culture. While you tick off the best things to see and do, you also get those insights into authentic life and learn about the way they do things and why.

Where's next on your list?

I'm a big foodie, so I'd love to join the Taste of Southern India - Temples and Tea Plantations trip. Seeing how much I love Japanese food, I'm also eyeing up the Taste of Japan - Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka food tour, too...

Kelly's top five places to visit in Japan:

1. Tokyo: Navigate your way around bustling Shinjuku and trendy Harajuku.
2. Kanazawa: With its historic buildings, Kanazawa is like stepping back in time to 19th-century Japan.
3. Kyoto: Home to over 2,000 temples and shrines, Kyoto showcases the best of tranquil Japan - visit Nijo Castle and the famous geisha district of Gion.
4. Osaka: This is the food capital of Japan, so pay it justice on a street food tour!
5. Takayama: Enjoy samplings from traditional local sake distilleries in this mountain town.
