Introducing: Tailormade South Africa

South Africa’s incredible diversity lends itself perfectly to a tailor-made holiday, which is why we’re excited to be adding it to our Tailormade collection in the next few months.

The Rainbow Nation is packed with sights, from cosmopolitan Cape Town to the rippling savannah of the Eastern Cape. With excellent infrastructure and value for money, South Africa is eternally popular for tailor-made trips, with a number of iconic self-guided routes taking you along the wildflower-dappled Garden Route or perhaps around the scarred battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal. South Africa’s Eastern Cape safari parks are malaria-free and renowned for being some of the best places to see the Big Five – a tailor-made holiday to South Africa isn’t complete without the chance to spot big cats and elephants in the wild.

Book a Tailormade holiday with Explore and we can customise your trip to fit your style; from start to finish, choose the accommodation, excursions and self-guided route to suit you. Here’s a selection of some of our soon-to-be-launched Tailormade adventures on offer in South Africa:

Go in search of wildlife in Kruger National Park

The very first of South Africa’s national parks, Kruger National Park was conceived in 1926 and remains one of the most popular destinations for wildlife spotting in the whole of Africa. All of the Big Five live here – along with 137 mammal species and over 500 varieties of bird. As well as its array of wildlife, Kruger is exceptionally diverse – granite kopjes and bushveld, dusky mountains and tropical forests. The park has a well-maintained network of roads, plus excellent guiding and a huge choice of accommodation options, creating a well-rounded safari experience.

Tour the winelands

Inland from Cape Town, South Africa’s winelands are surrounded by lumbering mountain ranges that ensure Stellenbosch and Franschhoek have the ideal conditions for wine making. While sampling flinty Chenin Blanc whites and rich Bordeaux reds, keep a keen eye trained on the colonial villages you’ll encounter on your tasting tours. Settlements date back to the 17th century, with traditional whitewashed Cape Dutch architecture a familiar sight, though many of the humble homesteads have been replaced by boutique wineries with world-class restaurants, making the Winelands a great place to sample South African cuisine.

Follow the wildflowers along the Garden Route

The Garden Route is South Africa’s most scenic stretch of road, hugging the coastline in a 300 kilometre stretch from Mossel Bay to Storms River. All along the route the topography varies wildly, with white sand beaches, shimmering lagoons, rolling hills and lush, forested mountains. The towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna are relaxing stopping off points, interspersed with peaceful villages and lively surf spots. Thrill-seekers will find plenty to do along the way, including bungee jumping from bridges, mountain biking and boat trips – you may even spot whales in season. It’s the perfect self-guided road trip.

Hop aboard the Blue Train

There’s something intensely romantic about travelling on a sleeper train, drifting off to the sound of the rattling carriages – falling asleep in one destination and waking up in another with brand-new views flashing past your berth window. South Africa’s Blue Train is one of the most luxurious train journeys in the world, cossetting its guests in wood-panelled luxury as it chunters between the jacaranda city of Pretoria and Cape Town. Incorporate the train journey into a longer itinerary and you’ll enjoy 27 hours of butler service and fine dining as you speed along 1,600 kilometres of track – a far more scenic way of travelling than flying.
