Our top active family trips in Europe
Antony Barton, our Family Programme Manager shares his thoughts on the most popular family multi-activity trips next summer.
Can’t decide what you want to do on holiday or want to try it all? If the idea of sitting on a beach non-stop for a fortnight with the kids leaves you feeling somewhat underwhelmed, why not consider a week on an Explore multi-activity holiday? Depending on the location you can enjoy thrilling activities as diverse as canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, snorkelling, surfing, windsurfing, mountain biking, horse riding, hiking and much more.
An Explore multi-activity holiday offers a new challenge each day, whether you’re learning a skill or simply discovering a fresh perspective of a different culture; all you need is a reasonable level of fitness, sense of adventure and up-for-it attitude – you can leave the rest to us. We provide all the equipment and training for each activity, along with fully qualified guides and an experienced Explore Leader to make sure you get the very most out of your holiday with us.
Many of our multi-activity holidays are centre-based, where the group stays at the same accommodation throughout the trip and uses it as a base from which go out and experience all the activities the region has to offer. Others are tours which travel through a destination, enjoying the best of the activities along the way.
Here are a few of my favourites.
Croatian Active Adventure, 8 days
Join Explore for a week of exciting activities in stunning Croatian landscapes. Based on an island just off Trogir on the beautiful Dalmatian coast, you'll enjoy the thrills of whitewater rafting, try out sea kayaking and take the challenge of canyoning through caves and waterfalls. There is also time to discover Croatia's historic sites or relax, making this the ideal trip for all the family. The hotel we feature also has an excellent swimming pool.
Tuscan Active Adventure, 8 days
This energetic trip for children over 11 explores one of Tuscany's hidden gems, the stunning Garfagnana Valley. A highly popular trip for a number of years at Explore, this trip combines varied outdoor activities with time to relax by the pool at a beautifully restored Tuscan villa. Kayak on a mountain lake, try your hand at via ferrata, spend a day mountain biking and have the opportunity to walk the Cinque Terre coastal path, cycle on the ancient city walls of Lucca and visit the leaning tower of Pisa. At the end of each day you'll return to the homely farmhouse to enjoy home-cooked Tuscan cuisine with our hosts.
Active Sicily, 8 days
Another active trip designed for older children aged over 11, our active Sicily trip offers adventure with a rich historical backdrop. This active trip blends a variety of activities with the cultural highlights of Palermo and Taormina. Activities include; sea kayaking, snorkelling, cycling, a water park, climbing, archery, power fan (falling from a high platform attached to a safety harness), walking on Mt Etna and a pasta/pizza cookery lesson. Activities are graded easy and just require an enthusiasm for adventure! Each evening you'll return to the comfort of your hotel and stay one night high up in the trees in a tree tent.
Legends of Lycia, Turkey, 8 days
Based in the tranquil harbour town of Kas, on this trip you'll canoe from the ancient city of Xanthos to the beach at Patara, kayak over the sunken ruins of Kekova and explore the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. Evenings are spent exploring the cobbled streets and enjoying local Turkish cuisine, it’s a place that feels like a home from home after no time at all.
