The South Downs Way: our route
The South Downs is a stunning range of chalk hills stretching across southern England, known for its rolling landscapes and picturesque villages. It’s a designated National Park, offering breathtaking views and a peaceful escape into nature.
One of its most iconic features is the South Downs Way, a 100-mile long-distance trail that runs from Winchester to Eastbourne. This well-loved route is popular with hikers, cyclists, and horse riders, offering a mix of open downland, wooded areas and coastal cliffs.
Starting at sunset, armed with headtorches and far too many snacks, the team headed out to the South Downs Way, climbing to the iconic Jack and Jill windmills silhouetted against the starry night sky.
Following the South Downs Way national trail, the small group traversed the rolling hills with breaks for star gazing and even a midnight birthday celebration for one of the walkers!
“The hike was a good level of challenge, not too hard or too easy, and was the right distance considering we were trekking at night. I liked that we had a lovely view of the sea and moon.”

At nautical twilight, the team stopped one last time, watching the pink-orange haze faintly illuminating the hills they’d crossed so far. Thermos flasks of hot drinks, homemade cheese straws and biscuits were the pick-me-up required!
“The stand-out moment for me was moon-gazing from the top of the South Downs and the finale on the beach.”
– Yvonne
As the team came off the Downs and into the River Adur valley, the temperature dropped and atmospheric mists hung over the river. But determined to finish, they made their way down to the beach – where a bacon bap and an optional swim on Shoreham beach was waiting. A fitting finale to an epic adventure!

In total, the team raised over £3,500 (including gift aid) for the Explore Foundation. In addition to the walk, the team pulled together to organise office bake sales, and sold homemade crafts, homegrown rhubarb and more to contribute to the total funds.
The creativity and generosity on display were inspiring; colleagues donated their time, talents and treat to support the Foundation. Every effort added up to a meaningful impact, and brought the team closer together – highlighting the power of community when it comes to making a difference.
