Soak up the sun, camp in the Sahara and visit Star Wars film sets - discover the best ways to explore Tunisia here.

Tunisia is famous for two things: beautiful beaches and impressive ancient sites. But it’s also known for its vast desert, bustling markets, distinctive architecture… we could go on.

Tunisia is a safe place to visit – in fact, the country is seeing record tourist numbers, welcoming an impressive 10 million visitors in 2024. Its coastline sits on the Mediterranean Sea, looking out towards its European neighbours of Malta and Sicily. On land, Tunisia is bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the east.

Travel to Tunisia with us for an affordable way to tick off the highlights with our 9- or 10-day itineraries. For many, the summer months are the best time to visit, but with so much to see and do, it's also a year-round destination.

Read on for more:

Soaking up the sun

The summer months (May to September) are the best time to visit Tunisia for its hot Mediterranean temperatures and making the most of its blue coastlines, although there's plenty of sunshine across the rest of the country throughout the year.

Visiting in the summer means you can make the most of the weather and soak up incredible sights and experiences. Our Tunisia summer tour has been designed to beat the heat, with enough time at shaded or covered spots to relax - perhaps an al fresco cafe in picturesque Sidi Bou Said will seal the deal!

Some of the accommodation we stay at include swimming pools - in Tunis, the hotel we use has beach access and a cooling sea breeze, making a fitting end to an action-packed day.

You can still soak up the sun (and cooler temperatures) by visiting during the other seasons. Watch blossoming flora in the spring months or explore the Chott-el-Jerid salt flats, which are the largest in the Sahara, before dashing across the dunes by 4WD.

Exploring epic deserts

Our Tunisia tours visit the inland desert of Kairouan, home to the Great Mosque of Kairouan. On our Best of Tunisia tour, you'll explore desert oasis towns like Tozeur which is popular for its bustling street markets, and Matmata with its 'invisible village' of some 50 underground dwellings - they're home to one of the oldest Berber tribes and are still in use today.

To amp up the adventure, you'll stay at a camp in the Sahara Desert. It's a true digital detox where you can embrace the tranquillity and switch off from the outside world amongst the sand dunes, before enjoying the clear night skies with some incredible stargazing.

Visiting historic sites

When it comes to ancient sites, Carthage in Tunisia is undoubtedly the highlight. Founded by the Phoenicians around 1000 BC, this ancient city became the most powerful trading centre on the Mediterranean before being sacked by the Romans in 146 BC. Wander around legendary Roman ruins, the Antonin Baths and the acropolis of Byrsa.

Another stand-out is El Djem's Roman amphitheatre - it's the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in north Africa. In its hey-day it accommodated 27,000 spectators, making it the largest of its kind outside of Italy! We take you on a guided tour of the site, through well-preserved dungeons and into the auditorium itself.

Discovering film location hotspots

Mos Espa in Nefta was used as a filming location for Stars Wars (Episodes I and II) - and amazingly, you can still visit the former film set today. In the films, Mos Espa formed the remote planet of Tatooine and was home to Anakin Skywalker, but despite the set being abandoned it's still relatively well preserved today.

We make a Tunisia Star Wars tour-inspired stop off at this well-known movie site, where you can see some of the major buildings used in the movies located on the edge of the Sahara. Its location feels like it's been built in the middle of nowhere - as if it's from a galaxy far, far away...

Eating (and shopping) like a local

One of the best ways to gain an authentic insight into a country is through its food - each bite tells a story of spices, flavours and history. In Hammamet, we stop for lunch at Douar Laaroussi, a restaurant owned by local Berbers. Afterwards, head into the kitchens to learn about Tunisian spices and make freshly baked bread.

You can buy local-made souvenirs at bustling bazaars and covered markets across the country, too. Visit the old medina in Kairouan and admire skilled craftsmen produce copper and silver engravings, woven carpets and saddles.

To complete the experience, stop for a rosewater-scented coffee and try the local delicacy, makroudh, which are small wheat cakes soaked in honey and stuffed with dates.

When is the best month to visit Tunisia?

With most of the country situated along the coast overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and temperatures peaking at around 35°C/95°F in July, although this is tempered by cooling sea breezes in the north of the country.

Yet Tunisia isn't necessarily hot all year round. Spring sees the most rainfall, but it can still be a pleasant time to visit with the blossoming flora. During the winter, while the daytime desert temperatures are generally warm, there's still some cold days - and night temperatures can drop to below zero.

Travelling to Tunisia on our small group tours means you'll follow well-planned itineraries led by an expert tour leader. Our Tunisian Coast and Ancient Carthage in Summer tour explores the best of northern Tunisia, while our Best of Tunisia tour winds from north to south through changing landscapes outside of the summer months.
