The world's beaches are beautiful – and we want to keep them that way. Millions of tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year, and while it can feel overwhelming, there are small, meaningful ways to help make a difference.

From choosing sustainable materials to supporting ocean-focused charities, every action counts. Even something as simple as choosing a lesser-known beach (whether that's off the beaten path, supports local conservation or just offers a fresh perspective) can help ease the pressure on our most popular coastlines.

You can also raise a glass to the cause with Sea Change Wine. Their award-winning eco wines are packaged with sustainability in mind: think natural corks, minimal packaging and labels partially made from grape waste. Plus, a donation from every bottle sold helps fund global marine conservation projects – they've raised over €600,000 so far! Why not join in and sip sustainably with 10% off your first order?

Read on to discover some of the world's best alternative beach holiday ideas, from the sun-kissed shores of the Ivory Coast to the dramatic black sands of Iceland:

1. Gjipe Beach, Albania

Head to Albania to discover one of the country's little-known coastal gems, Gjipe Beach. One of the prettiest beaches along the Albanian Riveria, this tiny bay is tucked between Gjipe Canyon and is only accessible by foot, adding to its charm. From almost-white sands to turquoise waters, Gjipe Beach is a little pocket of paradise. Albania is nestled in the Balkans but shares the same sun-drenched shores as neighbouring Italy and Greece, offering all the beauty of the Mediterranean – but without the crowds.

3. Seixal Beach, Madeira

While on Portugal's popular island of Madeira, seek out Seixal Beach. It's famous for its black volcanic sand, and while it's busier during the peak summer season, you'll enjoy a much quieter, serene experience if you visit in the shoulder season – just like we do on our Family Madeira Adventure. Let your feet sink into the soft sand as the views stretch towards lush green mountains, before taking a dip in the calm, crystal-clear waters.

4. Pink Beach, Indonesia

Voted one of the best beaches in the world, Indonesia's Pink Beach is located on Komodo Island. This flamingo-pink strip of red coral sand that stretches around the horse-shoe bay has to be seen to be believed. Although famous, the beach itself is rarely visited by tourists, so take time to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of this unique spot. Snooze in the sunshine, bathe in the warm, shallow waters or explore a vibrant underwater world of colourful fish on the reef. Join our Indonesia island-hopping discovery trip and venture to Pink Beach via a short cruise.

7. Curonian Spit National Park, Lithuania

Lithuania may not be the most obvious choice for a beach holiday, but the wild and windswept sand dunes of the Curonian Spit National Park should be on the must-visit list of any avid coastal explorer. 8. Reynisfjara Beach, Iceland

Discover the land of the midnight sun on our summer adventure in Iceland. The black sands of Reynisfjara Beach are backed by dramatic basalt cliffs, offering a one-of-a-kind landscape. Perhaps not a beach destination to top up your tan, but this is an excellent photography spot: waves crash against the cliffs, jagged Reynisdranger stacks jut out of the ocean and resident birdlife, including puffins, make an appearance. 9. Sagres, Portugal

Based in the small town of Sagres, this walking holiday explores an unspoilt corner of Portugal. Follow beautiful coastal paths to discover impressive cliff tops and quiet sandy beaches, sampling the delicious local seafood and crisp wines in the evening. You'll find Sagres in the extreme western tip of the Algarve, making it one of the most remote regions in the country; you may spot a few surfers here, otherwise you'll feel like you have the place to yourself!

Rock formations rise dramatically from clear turquoise water, surrounded by sandy beaches and more rock cliffs under a bright blue sky, depicting a serene coastal scene.

10. Galapagos Islands

Unlike many traditional beach destinations, the Galapagos Islands are largely undeveloped and protected. It's a living museum of evolution; a beach holiday where nature takes centre stage. The largest of the Galapagos is Isabela Island, home to white sand beaches, swaying palms and wildlife including marine iguanas; and go swimming at Tortuga Bay, one of the best of the entire chain. With important turtle nesting sites and the Charles Darwin Research Station, the Galapagos Islands is a model of sustainable tourism, with strict regulations in place to protect the environment – a great choice for eco-minded explorers looking for a meaningful, low-impact holiday.
