While our latest travel trends report details where we're travelling next year and why, we just couldn't stop there. We wanted to think about all the unique ways to experience a destination, whether that's seeing a country from a different angle or visiting somewhere totally off the beaten track.

You might think you know a country – until you dig deeper. From age-old voodoo festivals to mysterious 'singing' sands, the world is full of unexpected surprises!

Discover some of the quirkiest activities and experiences that you (probably) haven't heard of before:

1. Listen to mysterious 'singing' sands in Mongolia

As if sleeping in a traditional ger (yurt) camp wasn’t adventurous enough, Mongolia turns up the volume – quite literally. Out in the Gobi Desert, the Khongor Sand Dunes have a party trick: they sing.

When the wind sweeps across the dunes and wadis, they emit an eerie sound that sounds like singing. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and you’ve got to hear it for yourself.

2. See eerie mists in Oman

More mysterious natural wonders await in Oman. Camping in the Wahiba Sands doesn’t just mean you have a front-row seat to watch a mesmerising sunset and star-studded sky. During the cooler winter months, strong mists sweep across the dunes.

It’s a curious phenomenon that only occurs very early in the morning – challenge yourself to wake up first thing to see if you can spot it.

3. Join voodoo festival fun in Benin

Ouidah in Benin is said to be the spiritual home of voodoo, and at its annual Voodoo Festival you’ll see voodoo worshippers from around the world congregate in jaw-dropping traditional costumes and dress.

There are also masked dancers, multiple processions and a continuous beat of drums – hauntingly beautiful and unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

4. Admire Tudor England... in India

That’s right. In the 19th century, Shimla was known as the summer capital of British India. It’s like someone has dropped a slice of old England into a postcard-perfect hill station: think mock Tudor architecture set against a backdrop of the Himalayas. Spend a day here to embrace a blend of cultures with a blend of chai.

But the getting here is part of the unique experience too – board the Toy Train at Dharampur Station and ascend over 1000m (and through 103 tunnels) to reach Shimla. Spend a day here to embrace a blend of cultures (and a cup of chai), significant history and dramatic landscapes.

5. Watch working sheepdogs in Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, you can watch a traditional event that goes relatively under the radar: a sheepdog herding demonstration. This well-choreographed practice displays the sheepdogs’ important role in rural life, and how these skills have been honed down the generations.

You’ll gain a charming peek into this local slice of Irish culture.

6. Visit a cotton castle in Türkiye

Ethereal landscapes continue in Türkiye (Turkey). There’s no wonder why Pamukkale is nicknamed ‘cotton castle’; it looks like something dreamed up by a cloud with a flair for interior design! Terraced thermal pools in shades of toothpaste-blue spill over snow-white travertine ledges.

It’s not just a sight to see, as you can dip your toes in the Frozen Waterfall or Cleopatra’s Pool for an immersive (and downright different) experience.

7. Go truffle hunting in France

You’ve probably seen it on the menu, but how much do you know about truffles? In Sarlat, France, join a one-of-a-kind truffle hunting experience. Learn more about these prized fungi and meet the specially trained dogs that snuff out these elusive, earthy treasures.

It’s a fascinating journey into the world of culinary treasures and agricultural practices – and they’re certainly as rare as they are unusual! For another twist, why not swap the airport for train? Travel to and from your trip with International Rail – extend your unique adventure!

"I absolutely loved the truffle hunting experience with Adrein and his adorable dog Punti. There's something truly special about the thrill of uncovering those sought-after truffles in the earth."

8. See the skies from above and below in Bolivia

Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, with an all-white crust covering this high-altitude stretch of land near the crest of the Andes. December to March is known as the ‘mirror season’, as the heavy rainfall on the salt flats creates mirror-like reflections of the skies above.

Meanwhile, the dry season (April to November) sees the salt flats form an equally unique honeycomb layout. Either way, it’s an other-worldly landscape – except you only need to travel as far as Bolivia!

9. Seek out golden monkeys in Rwanda

While searching for mountain gorillas is popular in Uganda, in Rwanda there’s another face to seek out: Golden Monkeys. They’re an endangered species, but Volcanoes National Park is home to two habituated troops.

Head out on an early morning trek in search of them; they don’t tend to reside in higher-altitude areas, so you have a good chance of spotting them – usually jumping from tree to tree.
