Tours to Madeira

While most remote islands offer sun and sand, Madeira delivers dramatic peaks, UNESCO-listed forests and hiking trails that stretch high above the clouds – making this small island in the Atlantic Ocean one of Europe’s most rewarding adventure destinations.

Discover our Madeira tours

From scenic hiking trails and towering clifftop passes to hidden turquoise bays and terracotta-roofed hillside villages, Madeira has a unique way of surprising even experienced travelers. Our small group tours will take you to the heart of this unforgettable island.

Follow ancient footpaths through stunning mountains and explore a vast network of levadas on our best-selling Madeira walking tour. Waterfalls cascade through the hillsides and freshwater pools invite you in for a cooling dip. Hike the iconic Balcony Walk, a narrow path carved into the edge of a cliff, and navigate dark tunnels to the summit of Pico Ruivo.

For travelers who want to experience Madeira's culture and landscape in comfort, our Upgraded Madeira Island Discovery Tour is a premium small group experience that combines expert-led exploration with carefully selected accommodations. Head out on a boat trip along the island's south coast, swim in volcanic rock pools in Porto Moniz, and browse the colorful exotic produce at the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal.

For the chance to go whale and dolphin watching, a trip to the uninhabited Desertas Islands on our Madeira Island Discovery tour is an experience not to be missed. Cruise along the inky-blue seas on a wooden sailing boat, and keep your eyes peeled for breaching whales on the horizon or dolphins playing in our bow wave. Drop anchor in a secluded bay for a delicious home-cooked lunch onboard and dive into the crystal-clear water for a refreshing swim.

Madeira is also a fantastic destination for family adventures. Our Family Madeira Adventure includes jeep safaris across the volcanic highlands, a catamaran trip in search of dolphins and whales, and stand-up paddleboarding in sheltered Atlantic bays. This centrally based trip has plenty of opportunities to slow down - pasteis de nata in Funchal, a lazy afternoon at the black-sand beach of Seixal, or a wicker toboggan ride down from Monte that the whole family will be talking about for years.

Highlights of Madeira

From cloud-covered walking trails and ancient laurisilva forest to the cobblestone streets of Funchal and the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira belongs on any adventure traveler's bucket list. Here are some highlights from our tours:

1. Walk the Levadas and Summit Pico Ruivo

Madeira's levadas are an extensive network of ancient irrigation channels that stretch across the entire island. Our Madeira Walking Holiday follows these historic waterways through moss-draped laurisilva forest, a 20-million-year-old UNESCO World Heritage ecosystem found almost nowhere else on Earth. Trek through landscapes that shift from lush green valleys and terraced vineyards to open ridgelines with sweeping views across the Atlantic.

The highlight is the climb to Pico Ruivo, Madeira's highest point at 6,109 feet. The route passes through atmospheric, mist-filled tunnels cut into the rock at Encumeada before opening up onto the island's central ridge. On clear days, you can see all the way to the neighboring island of Porto Santo.

2. Experience Madeira Upgraded

Our Upgraded Madeira Island Discovery is designed for travelers who want the intimacy of a small group tour with additional comfort and quality. Stay in premium accommodations and explore the island with a knowledgeable local guide.

Highlights include Funchal's incredible Mercado dos Lavradores, where tropical fruits, dried herbs and fresh fish fill colorful stalls. Visit the hilltop village of Santana with its distinctive triangular thatched houses. Explore botanical gardens and embroidery workshops that tell the story of an island shaped by Portuguese seafarers, trade winds and volcanic geology. End each evening with a glass of aged Madeira wine - the same wine widely believed to have been used to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence - on a terrace overlooking the lights of the city.

3. A Family Adventure on the Atlantic

Madeira is one of Europe's best family destinations — compact, safe and packed with experiences that work for all ages. Our Family Madeira Adventure is based at a comfortable hotel with both indoor and outdoor pools, giving families the flexibility to go at their own pace day by day.

Active days include jeep safaris into the volcanic highlands, stand-up paddleboarding in sheltered bays, and catamaran excursions with a real chance of spotting common, bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins. Older kids can try canyoning, while younger ones will love exploring Seixal's black-sand beach.

Frequently asked questions about Madeira:

Where is Madeira?
Madeira is a Portuguese island chain in the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly 620 miles southwest of mainland Portugal and about 320 miles west of the coast of Morocco. Though it sits at a similar latitude to Casablanca, Madeira's climate is shaped by the ocean rather than the desert. The main island is the largest in the group and home to the capital, Funchal. The archipelago also includes the smaller inhabited island of Porto Santo, known for its long golden beach, as well as the uninhabited Desertas and Selvagens island groups.
