TET - Vietnamese New Year

Find out more about TET, including when it is and how it could affect your trip if you travel during Vietnamese New Year.

What is TET?

TET, short for Tet Nguyen Dan and also known as Vietnamese New Year, is the most important festival in Vietnam. It marks the start of spring and is celebrated with incredible flower displays, masked dancers and parades. Locals will spend time with family and loved ones, and honouring ancestors.

When is TET?

In 2027, TET will take place between Friday 05 February and Wednesday 10 February.  Celebrations can last from a day up to a whole week, depending on the region.

TET is a celebration of the lunar new year and is based upon the lunar cycle.

How will TET affect my trip?

TET can be a magical time to visit Vietnam, but please be aware that the festivities can impact your trip.
Although your itinerary will be able to run as planned and you will be able to visit all the key sites, you should expect some businesses (such as restaurants, shops, etc) to be closed or open for reduced hours during the holiday period. Some choices may be limited, such as smaller menu options, or occasionally carry a surcharge during this time.

Public transport is often significantly busier, as locals travel to spend time with their families. As always, your local leader will be able to help navigate these changes and will be able to make alternative arrangements if necessary.

Approaching a Vietnam adventure during TET with an open mind, a little patience and a bit of flexibility will help you make the most of this special time of year.

A common element of TET festivities is the parades, which are incredibly engaging and fun – but also quite loud. Please be aware that traditional celebrations use firecrackers, drums, and other instruments to ward off evil spirits.

In 2027, you may have the chance to see the midnight firework displays on 5 February, depending on where you are in your trip.

Why should I travel during TET?

TET is a fantastic time to travel if you are keen to see a different side of Vietnam and immerse yourself in these important Vietnamese traditions.

The festivities are spectacular – and more than compensate for any busy trains! Expect spectacular parades that are a kaleidoscope of colour, with whirling lion dancers, elaborate masks, and crowds of onlookers enjoying the atmosphere. The mua lan, or lion dancing, is performed to bring good luck and ward off evil. These parades are accompanied with a cacophony of noise, with people warding off evil spirits with firecrackers and gongs.

Flowers are a key part of the festivities. People decorate their houses in seasonal blooms, both inside and out, and huge amounts of fresh flowers are used in street decorations across the country.

Special foods are often eaten as part of TET, and you may get the chance to taste some of the local favourites - "chung" cake and "TET cake" are very popular, along with various kinds of candied fruits.

Aside from the main celebrations themselves, you have the added benefits of big cities such as Hanoi and Hoh Chi Min City being quieter than usual.

Ultimately, travelling during TET gives you the chance to see first-hand the wonders of the festival. It’s a chance to learn about the importance of these traditions and engage with the locals at this important and joyful time of year.
