Cycling in Africa

Africa covers about one fifth of the world’s total land area and is the second most populous continent after Asia with one billion inhabitants. There are any number of different cycling adventures to be experienced across this geographically and culturally diverse continent, from the penguin colonies of South Africa to the peaks that tower over the Berber villages of the Atlas Mountains. The quality of cycle routes varies from region to region and you can find a mixture of unpaved and paved routes as well as single track for mountain biking. Though the road infrastructure is generally basic you can cycle almost all of the 12000 kilometres from Cairo to Cape Town on smooth tarmac except for around 1000 kilometres on unpaved roads.
