Please review your overall experience and what your highlights were

I was very disappointed with the huge amount of litter and rubbish literally everywhere throughout the country. The Police and Army and plain clothes policemen accompanying us wherever we went was disturbing. Not being able to wonder around alone disappointing.

Our Response

We understand your disappointment regarding the amount of litter in the country - as a tour operator we do try to minimize our effect on any environment we visit, by being conscious of our waste and ensure it is properly disposed of, and hope that leading by example, others will follow.

Additionally, following advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth office, we feel it is in the best interest of our customers to have a police escort for this tour. We appreciate that this can be a little unsettling, but this is purely a precaution.

Our Response

Thank you for your feedback.  We would agree that there is more variety in Morocco and Tunisia, but this tour, holds a very rich variety of remains for those interested in Ancient History, with some of the finest Roman sites in North Africa.  With a limited tourist infrastructure, there are few restaurants anywhere.  It was unseasonably cold on this departure, and we’re sorry about this.  We provide online links on the Tour Notes so that customers can check the weather forecast shortly before travel.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

As I am interested in Roman archaeology, for me the Roman sites were all wonderful to visit. I was particularly looking forward to Lambaesis and it didn't disappoint. It’s not as showy as some of the other ancient sites, but it was my favourite.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Algiers is a most beguiling city. The Casbah is mysterious and seductive;winding alley ways and secret walled gardens. The old Ottoman houses do not disappoint...beautiful tiles, filigree lamps and views from the rooftop over the washing lines towards the bay.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

This is an unusual but memorable trip. I had previously been twice to southern & central Algeria but this trip shows a side of Algeria that few people know about. Highlights included Constantine, Djemila & the M'Zab Valley. Some of the local guides were very good & most entertaining. Hotels are pretty good with heating & hot showers.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Erwin was a fountain of knowledge(which he was keen to share) on ancient history. This made the archeological sites far more relevant & interesting. Good organizational skills & an obliging chap

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Expect cold & some wet weather in winter (we were in the desert for the only 2 days of rain in the last 2 years!). Some tedious drives through not very attractive townships to get to the interesting bits. Be prepared for celebrity status. Police accompany you almost everywhere & can be a bit invasive - takes a little getting used to. The bus is escorted by a relay of police cars

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

You don't need to be fit, but at least an ability to negotiate stairs without precipitating a cardiac or respiratory arrest would be useful. Don't expect culinary excellence or variety. Algeria is even more difficult for vegetarians unless you like omelettes, chips, pastries & pizza
