Today we'll drive to the picturesque town of Chalten (approximately three hours), lying at the confluence of the De las Vueltas and Fitzroy Rivers in Los Glaciares National Park. Arriving at approximately 11am, we'll have lunch before checking in to our hotel, and the afternoon is free to explore the town and its surrounding trails. Upon arrival to Chalten, you have the option to take a trip to Lago Del Desierto. This eight-hour trip includes a scenic drive to the lake, followed by a sailing across the waters. You'll arrive back to the hotel in the evening. For those who'd prefer to remain around the Chalten area, the scenery is spectacular wherever you are, and there are many walking paths (self-guided) to discover.

Accommodation
- 16 nights Comfortable Hotel
In Buenos Aires, we stay in a modern hotel located in the downtown area. It features a bar as well as a roof terrace on the sixth floor.
Throughout Patagonia, we stay in a selection of well-located, warm and comfortable hosterias, lodges and cabins. It's worth noting that some of these accommodations are a little dated, however, we believe this adds to their old-fashioned charm. Breakfasts at hotels in Argentina are typically a light continental fare with coffee/tea, juice, toast and jams and some fruit. You may find yoghurt, cereal and ham or cheese, but hot buffet breakfasts are rare.
One of the more memorable hotels on this tour is Cabanas del Paine, situated in the heart of the Torres del Paine National Park. Surrounded by mountains, it's an atmospheric stay. Dinners are included here and are made using local produce from the surrounding farmlands. On rare occasions when Cabanas del Paine is fully booked, we stay at Estancia El Ovejero, which is equally as stunning set on a ranch in the Patagonian pampas lands and is just an hour away from Torres del Paine.
Suitability
Is this the trip for you?
- We've graded the pace of this trip as full-on and we'll cover a lot of ground to pack in all of Patagonia's highlights. Expect multiple long stretches of travel with drives of five hours or more.
- This tour includes one ten-hour day journeying to and crossing the Chilean border. It's worth noting that the journey includes multiple methods of transport, and we can sometimes incur delays at border patrol.
- The best way to soak up the stunning scenery on this tour is on foot, so please be aware that whether we're in the beautiful Argentinian capital or the depths of the Tierra del Fuego National Park, there'll be a fair bit of walking involved each day.
- While you don't have to be a pro, it's recommended that you're physically fit in order to get the most out of the walks and hikes on this tour.
- Adding to the other-worldly scenery of this part of the globe is the ever-changing weather. Here, blue skies can quickly turn to grey, so you should be prepared for all weather including heat, wind and rain.
- There are some optional excursions on this trip that will need to be booked in advance due to their popularity. If interested, we recommend booking these as early as possible to avoid missing out.
- Argentina is a country famous for its steaks and meat-based meals. It is possible to cater for vegetarians and vegans on this trip, but the variety of food on offer in some places may be limited.

Chile
Currency: Chilean Peso (CLP)
You can choose to either change your money in advance or on arrival at the airport. Here you will find both ATMs and Bureau de Change. The exchange rate with the CLP is approximately CLP 880 to the British Pound. We recommend you take some emergency cash in USD as the GBP exchange isn’t very good. Notes should be in good condition otherwise they may not be accepted. Please check on line for up to date information
Where to change: Tour Leader will advise on arrival
ATMs: ATMs can be found in the major towns and cities for cash withdrawals in CLP. Always have some cash back up as they are not always reliable
Card notes: Credit card are widely accepted in many shops and restaurants but some may be subject to a service charge
Credit cards accepted: No
Argentina
Currency: Argentine Peso (ARS)
Argentina's economy is in a messy state at the moment. Payment on credit or debit cards is not always accepted in shops and restaurants. Where it is accepted sometimes a higher exchange rate will be used. Shops may even charge a higher amount for payment on a card. We strongly recommend taking a minimum of US$ 400-500 of your total spending money in cash, mostly in $50 or $100 dollar bills. Smaller bills are not always widely accepted.
Where to change: Your Tour Leader will advise you on arrival.
ATMs: Available in Buenos Aires and in the cities, but the official exchange rate to withdraw from an ATM may be higher than when exchanging cash. If travelling to Patagonia, the ATM machines are not always reliable with chip and pin cards, and we recommend carrying back up cash.
Card notes: Payment on credit or debit cards is not always accepted in shops and restaurants. Where it is accepted, a higher exchange rate will often be used, which is highly volatile but often extremely unfavourable. Shops may even charge a higher amount for payment on a card.
Credit cards accepted: No
