Colombia is a beautiful country with wonderful contrasting regions so it is difficult to pick the highlights. So pleased Popayan has been added to the tour as this area is very interesting. Everywhere the mix of modern/quirky bars and restaurants make eating out exciting. Be prepared for the heat and humidity in Cartagena as this was a shock to the body after the very pleasant climate elsewhere. Also be aware that if visiting during holiday periods (Christmas/New Year) places may close or be very busy. Juan our Explore Leader did an excellent job juggling the itinerary to take this into account.

Cartagena was brilliant, New Years Eve in Andres Carne de Res was fantastic (not part of the tour), Popayan and the South West was great, Villa de Leyvre is exceptionally pretty and the Salt Cathedral at Zipaquira is not to be missed!
If possible try yo visit this country at Christmas - not only is the weather great, but there is so much more to do than sitting at home with another mince pie :)

Harrow. Middlesex.
The colonial town of Villa de Leyva and the quirky hotel we stayed in.
Also the clay house we visited from there.
The buskers of Popayan square and the small towns we visited
where the locals were enjoying their Xmas holiday.
Playing tejo, a crazy game involving clay balls and gunpowder!
Everything about Cartagena, great bars and a decent, central hotel.

Christmas is a good time to visit as Colombians have huge decorations
and lights everywhere.
Bogota was cool not cold and one fleece would be sufficient.
Summer clothes for everywhere else particularly Cartagena which was
mega hot!

This trip lived up to it's name! It was definitely 'contrasts of Colombia'. Our guide Juan was excellent and made everything an interesting cultural experience. His English was perfect and he couldn't do enough for us all......he could solve every problem.

La Candelaria and the Gold Museum were a great introduction to Bogota, but beware the Mount Monserrate - we had a 2 hour queue for the return funicular. Villa de Leyva and

Cartagena are spectacular colonial towns - Cartagena is Caribean and very hot.

Chalfont St Giles
I have travelled with Explore many times ( c 15 or so), so that says it all. I would certainly recommend Explore but only to the right sort of person, since many people would not enjoy the tours.
