What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Everything! We didn't know what to expect but we saw great scenery, enjoyed good homecooked food (if anything there was too much of it) and thoroughly enjoyed the walking which wasn't too taxing.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

He was very good and looked after us well

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Just enjoy it.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Beautiful scenery - more idyllic rolling countryside than dramatic mountain views, though some of the latter as well. The food was great throughout. The accommodation was better than I expected, especially the first guesthouse in Kosovo, which is much nicer than 'basic' implies.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Asen was very knowledgeable and accommodating. He had a real passion for the mountains, for nature, and for Bulgaria in general, which he willingly shared with us all. He also invited us to hear his band play in Sofia on the last evening, which was a great way to finish the trip for those of us who went.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

I'd agree with the rating as 'easy' - I found the walking easy because the pace was slow and I walk a lot in hilly terrain. I think that a rating of 'easy' means that most people in reasonable shape can complete all the walking, though they might not actually find it easy unless they walk a lot at home, if that makes sense.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

"Horribly early group flights both ways, but I knew that in advance. The photo used on the website and in the literature to represent the trip doesn't do the scenery justice - I suggest choosing a more inspiring one."

It was all good, the scenery was diverse and spectacular.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

"Great ,knew his stuff. Also a talented musician see his web site Asen & Milena. P.s Tony the driver was great too."

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Do not be put off by the description "simple guest houses". All the guest houses used on this trip were clean, comfortable very hospitable and offered really delicious home cooking.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

I think this tour seems to be a hidden gem. If you want a walking tour not to far away and far from mass tourism this is it!

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Day 3 and the trip to the village with the surprise. Another reviewer described it as magical and I can only agree with that. The penultimate morning walk to the abandoned smallholding was also wonderful. However the entire trip was fantastic and I do recommend it. The scenery and peaceful atmosphere (Alpine meadows full of flowers!) of the Rodopi Mountains was marvellous.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Asen Morino was fantastic. Efficient, laidback and friendly.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

"Some of the walks are more demanding than the brochure would imply. Day 3 Orpheus Rocks in particular is quite tough as it involves a steep climb and descent. Some of our older members (60+) struggled with some of the walks. Younger people will have no problem although you will ache a bit - one of our members was 58 and she was fine. If you are older and want to do this, make sure you do some practice walking in advance including up and down slopes. If you do get tired on days 2 and 3, the thing to remember is that the walks do get easier as the holiday progresses, so after day 3 you won't find it anywhere near as tough. "

"I would swap the Kosovo and Erzerovo guesthouses around so you stay in Erzerovo in days 1 and 2 and Kosovo in days 3 and 4 if that's at all possible. This is because the Kosovo guesthouse is nicer and in a better location, and it would enable those members of the party who wish a break from walking mid-way in the holiday to be able to have a day's rest in a nicer environment. I personally found the day 2 hike (Orpheus Rocks) the hardest so some members of our group were ready for a breather on day 3 or 4. This comment should be set in context - overall it was a marvellous holiday which I thoroughly enjoyed! "

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Day 3 walk. A steady climb throug the most beautiful wild flower meadows. Continues through Beech and hasel woods. The a BBQ/ the source of the river Arda followed by a surpise. A gentle walk down via the Greek border and cold drinks at a cafe/bar built over a river. A magical day

Our Response

We aim to describe the individual walks in sufficient detail on the Trip Notes so that expectations can be met, and we welcome customer feedback on this – and we can assure everyone that we learn from it!

The guesthouse in Ezerovo is roomy, comfortable, and out in the hills.  Plenty of opportunities for walking right from the doorstep if the day's activities haven't been sufficient for you.  The walks were fairly well indicated by the trip dossier, varying each day with some days being easy, some longer and with more moderate level effort required.  The canyon walk was exciting but a bit hard going in places - short but extremely steep slippy inclines.  We were there in August, and the weather was good.  It might have been nice to spend longer in Sofia (we only reached it the evening before early-morning departure), so if you have some time to spare, consider arranging your own flights and spending an extra night or two in this pleasant city.
