What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

It is hard to pick a single highlight with this tour because the thing that stood out and made it one of the best tours I have been on was the fact it was so well balanced and just flowed. The pace and variety was just right and was expertly balanced by Elaine whose experience just shone through. I suppose the most memorable bit of the standard tour was Fes and the trip through the Medina, but in terms of optional trips it was Volubilis.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Excellent ! You could really see Elaine's experience and enthusiasm shine through. I have been on a number of Explore expeditions in the past, and whilst there have been no poor leaders, Elaine is by far the best and by a long way.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

I think this is a hidden gem in the Explore catalogue of trips. The description whilst accurate doesn't really do the tour justice. I must admit the main driver in booking for me was the use of trains and the Morocco part. Actually the Spanish element was at least as good and exceeded my expectations.

Enjoy the tajines in Morocco - super food.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

Travelling by train is an excellent way of experiencing a country particularly when you are in a carriage of locals and have to speak French!

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

"The three days in Spain was fun and Ronda is beautiful.
The ferry crossing was fun also.
Morocco certainly was more of a culture shock than I/we had anticipated, but still a great experience.
Things to remember, don't expect   first class on Moroccan trains to be luxury, far from it! Second class on the Spanish trains were far more comfortable ."

Our Response

Your tour leader Elaine would have been very prompt in contacting both our agent and our UK office if any were unacceptable.  The Explore ethos is to use small, locally-owned mid range establishments, but if you feel this may be a culture shock too far in Third World countries, we also offer a selection of tours graded as ‘Comfortable’ where the standard of accommodation is higher than on the majority of our holidays.

My husband and I had not travelled much by rail before and so this was a real treat and it was much more comfortable than travelling by bus.  The scenery and architecture in Andalucia was beautiful.  The tour of Morroco was very interesting and varied and there were some very good local guides.  Each city has its own characteristics - the Medina in Fez was very interesting if a bit claustrophobic!  I also enjoyed Rabat which seemed very open and breezy on the coast after Fez, and the mosque at Casablanca was beautiful. After seeing these other sights, Marrakech did seem at bit tired looking but the optional trip to the Berber village is a must.  The short walk to the rest house and lunch in such beautiful scenery made this last day a real highlight.  Overall this was an interesting and varied trip but a couple of things could have made it better.  I was looking forward to seeing Volubilis but as there was only 2 of us who wanted to go it would have been too expensive for us, so we didn't bother.  We also had two guides, one for each country, who were very nice but not very informative about each country, for Explore guides.  I believe that they have to have a permit for each town/city but they could have spoken more about the countries themselves and the customs.  In Morroco there were very good local guides which counteracted this but in Andalucia there wasn't, so I would recommend reading up a bit before you go.
