Total eclipse and more art

Total eclipse and more art

On the 21st August 2017, millions of people across the US will be witnessing the astronomical phenomenon of a total solar eclipse – here’s how you could join them.

The path of the 2017 solar eclipse passes directly through the US, from Pacific to Atlantic, and last year Explore launched a range of trips to coincide with this spectacle across the breadth of the country. These trips have been so overwhelmingly popular that there are now only limited spaces available on our Nashville to Detroit departure, where you will be witnessing the longest period of darkness across the country in Carbondale, Illinois – getting more totality for your buck!

Carbondale is going to be one of the liveliest places to witness the eclipse as NASA has chosen this area as the place to stream their live coverage of the event, and there will be astronomy and arts events going on across 2 days.

For those of you who want the chance to see the total eclipse but aren’t regular stargazers, fear not! As well as the events on the 20th and 21st August, our 13 day journey from Nashville to Detroit hits some of the highlights of America’s Midwest, from the majestic Mississippi River up to the Great Lake of Lake Michigan and over to the fascinating city of Detroit. Music is a particular highlight at the start and end of the trip with the country and motown scenes in Nashville and Detroit being at the very core of the cities’ personalities.

Detroit itself is a hub of art and innovation, and the opportunity to visit the Heidelberg Project is not to be missed. This unique art project uses objects salvaged from the streets of the city to tell the story of issues that Detroit has faced over the years. The entire street is part of the project, making it a living art museum.

We also take a stop at Mammoth Caves National Park which at 90 miles of consecutive cave systems is… well… mammoth! Bourbon tasting, craft brews, the Kentucky Derby, Abraham Lincoln’s hometown and the dramatic Chicago skyline are also on the tick list for this all-encompassing discovery of America’s Midwest, centred by the pinnacle of the 2017 total solar eclipse.
