Cycling adventures this Autumn

Cycling adventures this Autumn

Summer might be drawing to a close in Europe, but elsewhere in the world the skies are sunny and temperatures perfect for a cycling holiday. Autumn is the ideal time to get away for a break in the saddle, whether you take advantage of the Middle East’s balmy warmth or the perennially summery weather in Cuba. At this time of year tourism wanes, and at the slower pace of travelling on two wheels you’ll get to see much more detail than you might otherwise miss from the window of a car or train.

On each of our small group cycling trips you’ll be accompanied by one of our award-winning Explore Leaders, who will illuminate the history and culture of the region you are visiting, with first-hand knowledge of the area. They’ll be able to point out all of the sights – from spotting wildlife in the Great Rift Valley to the best place to stop for tacos in Mexico. As well as discovering a country, you’ll also get a great sense of achievement at the end of each day’s cycling, improving your fitness along the way.

Here are our top seven cycling holidays for autumn.

Tanzania

Our new moderate to challenging grade Cycle Tanzania trip saw its first departure last week – you can read more about it from the Explore Leader, Whitey, here. Visit in November to catch the tail end of the dry season as the rains begin to fall, when you’ll find animals easier to spot around the rivers and waterholes. Cycling through the country offers a great way to travel between the national parks for game viewing safari drives.

Morocco

After the scorching summer, Morocco becomes much cooler once the autumnal months arrive, with temperatures of around 23 degrees and seven hours of sun a day. Choose our moderate grade Southern Oasis Cycling trip to explore the kasbahs and tribal villages, visiting Marrakech and the High Atlas, and enjoy the comfortable temperatures that make cycling a breeze.

Sicily

Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to visit Italy, as the crowds of peak tourist season dissipate and the landscape changes to rich oranges, reds and deep greens. It’s also the time of harvest, so as you pedal along the rural lanes on our easy grade Cycle Western Sicily trip you may spot farmers bringing in the olives and grapes to be produced into olive oil and wine. Sample both as you explore the towns, beaches and islands.

Mexico

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its beaches, Maya ruins and incredible cenotes. Visit in November on our easy grade Cycle the Yucatan trip and explore its colonial towns like Merida, the amazing stepped pyramid at Chichen Itza and its delicious cuisine. November signals the start of the dry season, so you’ll find it warm and pleasant (but you can always call off in a cenote or the Caribbean Sea post-ride).

Vietnam

Vietnam can be scorching, but the cool and mostly dry winter from November to April offers the best time for a cycling holiday. Travel on quiet roads around this fascinating country and get so much closer to the locals. Our moderate grade Cycle Saigon to Hanoi offers a comprehensive overview of Vietnam, from the bright lights of Ho Chi Minh City through the Central Highlands to French-influenced Hanoi.

South Africa

In the Southern Hemisphere spring is approaching, and in South Africa’s Western Cape Province this means an explosion of colourful wildflowers, lush greenery and pleasant temperatures. Our moderate grade Cycle the Cape trip explores the roads of the famous Garden Route and the rugged coastline, famous vineyards and the slopes of Table Mountain.

Cuba

Cuba stays warm and sunny almost all year round. What better way to explore than by bicycle, where you can enjoy the verdant countryside, colonial towns and friendly hospitality the slow way. Our easy to moderate grade Highlights of Cuba by Bicycle route follows the quiet backroads from Havana to charming Trinidad, staying with the locals in casas particulares along the way.
